Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed will be released on October 18, 2022.

IllFonic, the team behind Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, has a history of converting film franchises into video games. In the past, IllFonic has made games like Friday the 13th: The Game and Predator: Hunting Grounds. As a result, Ghostbusters fans can rest assured that the franchise is currently in the hands of competent developers.

"Ghostbusters is one of the most beloved IPs in the world, so we are pulling out all the stops to make something special and accessible to this diverse fanbase," IllFonic CEO Charles Brungardt said in a press release. "If you’re someone who loves the movies or asymmetrical multiplayer games, this was made for you."

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed Trailers

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed was revealed through an announcement trailer on March 22, 2022. The trailer was filled with nostalgia as it showed off classic Ghostbusters characters, gave viewers a glimpse of the Ecto-1, and even played the iconic Ghostbusters theme song.

Of course, the reveal trailer also highlighted the multiplayer gameplay elements of Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, giving fans a solid idea of what they can expect from the game once the Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed release date comes.

An additional gameplay trailer from that same day provided an in-depth look at one of the most unique features this game has to offer: the ability to play as a ghost. Thanks to these two trailers, we already have a solid idea of what the different gameplay mechanics will be in Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed Gameplay

Like Friday the 13th: The Game and Predator: Hunting Grounds, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is an asymmetrical multiplayer game. At its core, this means that players will be able to play alongside friends and strangers in mismatched teams; specifically, a team of four Ghostbusters versus a team of one ghost.

For the Ghostbusters, the objective is to find and capture a ghost that is running rampant inside a museum. The Ghostbusters will use a P.K.E. Meter to locate the ghost before blasting it with energy from their Proton Packs using a Particle Thrower. In doing so, they will then be able to capture their enemy inside a Ghost Trap.

However, the ghost has three rifts set up throughout the museum that it can use to respawn after being trapped. As a result, the Ghostbusters’ goal is initially to find and destroy all of the rifts before they can focus on capturing their ghastly enemy and winning the match. In addition, the Ghostbusters are capable of calming down civilians, which they must do to keep the civilians from leaving and to prevent the ghost from winning.

On the flip side, players can also play as a ghost trying to scare away civilians without drawing too much attention and getting captured. The ghost can approach and pass through civilians to frighten them, can shoot slime to stun nearby Ghostbusters, and can even shoot out ghostly minions to do its bidding.

The ghost has a limited energy meter, known as Ectoplasm, which determines its ability to utilize its dastardly abilities. However, the ghost is able to refill its Ectoplasm by possessing inanimate objects. Likewise, the ghost can haunt inanimate objects in order to move them around the map and even make them levitate in the air. The P.K.E. Meter will activate near any haunted or possessed objects, meaning the ghost can hide inside a possessed object and obfuscate its location with an array of haunted objects.

Ultimately, the ghost’s end goal is to scare all civilians out of the building. Once all of the civilians have fled, a 90-second timer will begin. If the ghost can avoid capture until the end of the countdown, then it will have officially haunted the museum and will win the match.
