Treasure Maps and Buried Treasure will soon return to Fortnite in a new form. Buried Treasure was originally a limited-time item that existed back in Fortnite Chapter 1: Season 8.

Fast-forward to Chapter 3 and it looks like Fortnite players will soon be on the hunt for riches and fortune once again through a revamped version of Fortnite Treasure Maps and Buried Treasure. Let's go over all the details surrounding Rover - the codename for the game's new Treasure Maps.

Where can you find Treasure Maps?

While these Fortnite Treasure Maps and the codenamed "Rover" item are revamped versions of the vaulted Buried Treasure item, they will likely share similar mechanics.

If this new Chapter 3 item is anything like the Buried Treasure from Chapter 1, it will be Legendary rarity and only available in chests and as floor loot. So, finding a Fortnite Treasure Map will come down to pure luck.

How to use Treasure Maps

Finding a Treasure Map is only the first step in securing the top-tier loot found within the buried treasure chest. You'll need to use the map to locate the dig site. When a Treasure Map is in your inventory, an area on the island will be marked with a golden beam — similar to the map markers that appear when you or a squad member pings a location.

Additionally, you can open up the Treasure Map and hold it out to view a dotted line trail to the location of the buried treasure. When you get close to the dig site, a large black "X marks the spot" symbol will appear on the ground. Approach the centre of the X and use your pickaxe to dig out the treasure.

Treasure Maps and Buried Treasure release date

While we already know a lot about these remastered Treasure Maps and Buried Treasure, the release date is still uncertain. The Rover item may be only a few updates away, or it could be something Epic Games is saving for a future season.

When the original Buried Treasure item existed, Fortnite's season theme was all about adventure, pirates, and the jungle. The existence of this new Fortnite Treasure Map item could signal a future pirate-themed season.

We can't pinpoint an exact date, but Treasure Maps and Buried Treasure will return in their new form sometime during Chapter 3. We will update this guide as more information on the Rover item is revealed.
