The giant birds are back in Final Fantasy 16, and thankfully you'll eventually get the opportunity to ride your very own Chocobo, although it is a missable event in the game. Unfortunately, you do have to wait quite a while before you're able to pick one up - despite the fact that they roam many of the fields that you will be running through.

Thankfully we've got all of the details you'll need to ride a Chocobo in Final Fantasy 16 in this very guide, so make sure to read below to find out more.

SPOILER WARNING: This guide may contain story spoilers, so be sure to proceed at your own risk to ensure details in the game remain a surprise.

How to get a Chocobo mount

In order to get a Chocobo mount in Final Fantasy 16 you must complete The White Winged Wonder side quest in Martha's Rest. This quest becomes available near the start of the third time period of the game, which is around 15 hours in.

You can find The White Winged Wonder side quest just north of The Fallen Gate and south of the Martha's Rest obelisk. It is indicated by a 'plus symbol' side quest marker, so it should be easy to distinguish from the standard additional activities in the game.

The quest is started by speaking to Rowan, Traveling Trader, who will make you aware of a Chocobo called Whiteheart that is being hunted by bandits, and make a plea for you to save them.

Follow the green quest marker to the marshes and Clive should find a white feather on the floor. Continue to the next marker and the bandits holding Whiteheart hostage should be just beyond here.

Dispatch of the bandits and their reinforcements that arrive - taking care when fighting the tough Huntsman enemy - and the Chocobos should be saved. After this, you will realise something rather important about Whiteheart, and then complete the quest, giving you the ability to ride a Chocobo in Final Fantasy 16.

How to ride a Chocobo

After you have completed The White Winged Wonder side quest, all you need to do to ride a Chocobo in Final Fantasy 16 is hold R3 to summon your Chocobo, and then press X when next to Ambrosia to mount the bird.

Once you're riding the Chocobo, use the left analogue stick to move at normal speed, and then hold R2 to gallop. If you're wanting to slow down to a halt all you need to do is press L2, and then to dismount you just need to hold R3 again.

You can summon your Chocobo in most open areas in the game across the various kingdoms, but you typically won't be able to ride them when in towns, dungeons, or near important story or event areas.
