Dead Island 2 has long been in limbo since its announcement back in 2014, going through multiple studio changes and directional shifts that have led to the majority of people forgetting about its existence and even thinking it's been outright cancelled.

The first Dead Island made a huge splash after the debut of its cinematic trailer, but despite receiving mostly positive reviews and fanfare, the game didn't live up to it. Since the release of its follow up Dead Island: Riptide, the series has been dormant - aside from the occasional article about development on the sequel going awry. It seems the game is still being made though, so read on for a breakdown of everything we know about Dead Island 2, including the release date, trailers, gameplay, and more, we've got you covered.

Dead Island 2 Release Date

There is no confirmed release date or release window for Dead Island 2 as things stand. The parent group of the game's publisher, Embracer Group, have suggested that it could be a next-gen exclusive and release some time in 2023, but there's still no official word on when it will come. If the 2023 release window is accurate, we could see a reveal sometime this year, so we'll update this when we get word.

While nothing is official yet, a leak has surfaced that indicates we could be looking at a February 3rd 2023 Dead Island 2 release date. The leak appeared on Amazon after the game was listed with new artwork alongside the preliminary release date. We're yet to see a renewed look at Dead Island 2, although an updated trailer is rumoured to make a debut at Gamescom in August 2022.

Dead Island 2's development has been tumultuous to say the least, with multiple studio changes since it was first revealed. Originally, Yager Development, of Spec Ops: The Line fame, was brought on to develop before they were replaced by Sumo Digital in 2015. After four years, Sumo was then replaced by Dambuster Studios who developed Homefront: The Revolution, and as far as we know, they are the current devs on the project.

So far, only Yager's version of the game has seen the light of day, with some gameplay and a CGI trailer. It's unknown whether development drastically shifted to a different direction under Sumo or Dambuster, but we'll know for sure once we get an official look at the game.

The first look we got at Dead Island 2 was a CGI trailer back in 2014, showcasing a man jogging down Venice Beach in California, while everything around him turns to chaos as zombies devour members of the public and those still living panic. Eventually, he turns before a car comes careening toward the camera and splats him. Cut to black, and we hear the voices of Jack Black and Aaron Paul as they squabble about driving off.

Not too long after this was the gameplay trailer that debuted at Gamescom 2014. It showed some pre-alpha footage as a player ran around a California suburb, shooting, slicing, and smashing zombies. It had an unmistakable Dead Island look, with the makeshift weapons and clunk combat of the first, along with some scavenging for a mission objective.

More recently, there was a leaked build of the game that was dated to 2015, shortly before Sumo Digital took over development. It showed more of what we saw in the Gamescom trailer, but since then we've not seen any of Sumo or Dambuster's versions. Presumably, we'll get some form of gameplay if the title is revealed later in the year.

Dead Island 2 Gameplay And Story

Dead Island was an action RPG that focused on melee combat and questing, and while our initial glance at the sequel looked similar, we can only speculate what direction the game has gone in since then. It will likely have the same structure, but built up after the past decade of technological evolution and design innovations.

The same goes with the game's story. In the Yager version, it appeared to take place in various locations around California, with Los Angeles and San Francisco confirmed. It was supposed to take place a few months after the original, with a new outbreak raging throughout the state of California, causing the US Army to put it under full quarantine. Whether this is till the plan under Dambuster's direction is unknown, but since the groundwork had already been set, it would make sense to make the most of it.

Dead Island 2 Platforms

Originally, the confirmed platforms were PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, but a whole new generation has been released since then, and we've had rumours that it will be a next-gen exclusive, placing it on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Much of the information throughout this article is speculation, so we'll make sure to update it thoroughly once we get official information about the Dambuster version of the game. That's all we know so far about Dead Island 2.
