The Call of Duty 2022 release date is still a ways away, but that hasn’t stopped critical information from leaking out ahead of schedule. We may already know the developer, setting, and story of this future Call of Duty title. Let’s go over all of the rumours and leaks surrounding the Call of Duty 2022 release date.

Call Of Duty 2022 release date

Call of Duty 2022, a.k.a Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, will release on October 28, 2022.

Pretty much every major Call of Duty title through the franchise’s history had a release date set within the month of October or November. With the Call of Duty Vanguard release date scheduled for November 5, 2021, as long as things stay on track, Call of Duty fans can expect MW2 to release around the same time.

Call Of Duty 2022: Developed by Infinity Ward

Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games, and Infinity Ward are the three primary studios working on the Call of Duty franchise. These three studios take turns each year developing the next Call of Duty title. Treyarch was responsible for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War in 2020 while Sledgehammer Games is the developer behind the upcoming Call of Duty Vanguard. That means 2022 is Infinity Ward’s turn.

Recent leaks all but confirm the continuation of this Call of Duty development pattern. Some individuals discovered a back-end server opening into NVIDIA’s GeForce technology site that allowed users to see hundreds of games being tested out on their servers.

This list included a variety of unannounced games. One of the games on the list was an Activision Blizzard published game with the developer Infinity Ward. In a follow-up statement, NVIDIA confirmed that the leaked list was real, meaning Infinity Ward will be responsible for Call of Duty 2022.

Call Of Duty 2022: Is it Modern Warfare 2?

Reputable Call of Duty and Battlefield leaker, Tom Henderson, reported on September 13, 2021, that Call of Duty 2022 would be a sequel to Modern Warfare 2019. This report was later confirmed by insider sources via VGC and Charlie INTEL.

A sequel to Modern Warfare 2019 would make sense, as the Modern Warfare 2019 campaign left off on a cliffhanger. Furthermore, the creators of Modern Warfare 2019 themselves have publicly stated that a sequel was something they were interested in.

The Narrative Director behind Modern Warfare 2019, Taylor Kurosaki, confirmed on Twitter that they are saving some of the characters for “whatever’s next” and that “there’s plenty of ground left for sequels.” Kurosaki doubled down in an interview with PC Gamer. When speaking on Modern Warfare 2019, Kurosaki states, “we would love to make another one of these. We have every intention of making another one of these.”

It’s safe to say that the higher-ups at Infinity Ward and Activision have their eyes on a sequel to Modern Warfare 2019. With Infinity Ward confirmed as the developers of Call of Duty 2022, chances are high that the 2022 title will be a Modern Warfare 2019 sequel.

Call Of Duty 2022: Storyline and setting

According to those leaked NVIDIA documents we discussed earlier, the codename for Call of Duty 2022 is Project Cortez.

Tom Henderson, VGC, and Charlie INTEL sources all claim that Call of Duty 2022 will include a campaign involving U.S. special forces fighting a covert war against Colombian drug cartels.

Interestingly, the "Cortez'' codename could be a hint toward the contents of the Call of Duty 2022 story. The 1994 Harrison Ford movie, Clear and Present Danger, features a villain called Colonel Félix Cortez and also sees U.S. special forces fighting a covert war in Colombia. This little tidbit further backs up the claims made by Tom Henderson and the anonymous insiders.

Call Of Duty 2022: Platforms

Based on what we’ve seen from Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard, Call of Duty 2022 will likely release on PC along with both last-gen and next-gen versions of PlayStation and Xbox.

Barring unforeseeable circumstances, Call of Duty 2022 will certainly be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. There’s a chance that Activision and Infinity Ward opt to move on and ignore last-gen consoles, but it's not anticipated.

Occasionally, Call of Duty titles of the past have been available on Nintendo systems like the GameCube, Wii, and Nintendo DS. As for Call of Duty 2022 on the Nintendo Switch? Only time will tell.

Call of Duty and Sony are currently engaged in a partnership, meaning that PlayStation players will probably get extra benefits with their purchases of Call of Duty 2022. That is why PlayStation players had access to the Call of Duty Vanguard beta before everyone else.

Finally, we can assume that Call of Duty 2022 will feature crossplay. This means that players on different platforms will be able to party up and match up with and against one another in online multiplayer.

That wraps up everything we know about the Call of Duty 2022 release date and other Call of Duty 2022 rumours and leaks. Check out our Call of Duty homepage for more guides.
