Let's be honest, Halo is in a tricky spot right now. Halo Infinite Season 4 is poking its helmeted head around the corner, hoping to rope players back to Halo Infinite's action with the return of Infection, but for many, it's too little, too late.

343 Industries proved to too many players that it couldn't handle the series' many facets at launch, struggling to launch even the game's co-op until much later, while Forge and other features spent too long in the oven and disappointed fans.

There are rumblings that 343 isn't up to the job, especially as it had to reshuffle its affairs to accommodate for the future of the series. And now, fans are beginning to wonder if the future of Halo should be taken from its hands. Xbox may be about to consider it.

In a recent interview with Axios, the head of Xbox Game Studio Matt Booty was asked about whether Halo would ever migrate development teams again, and if 343 Industries' failures would amount to the series being pulled from it. And it doesn't look like he's willing to strip the team of their biggest title.

"If something like that were to happen, it would have to come from the studios," he says. "It's unlikely that we would come in and dictate that from the top.

It's perfectly reasonable and pretty reflective of Xbox to put it this way. This hasn't come long after Phil Spencer said that even despite the failures of Redfall, he doesn't want to dictate what Xbox's studios create and that he wants them to follow their passions by trusting what they believe they can achieve.

The Halo question comes after suggesting the series is handed over to the likes of Activision's many sub-studios, with players wondering if the Call of Duty team could carry the series to a new future. But it doesn't look like that's going to happen unless everyone can make a decision together.

Given that Halo is 343's life raft right now, it's unlikely the developer will let go. For the time being, at least, Halo is being looked after by 343. Though there are many players that wish things were different, there's still a chance the team can bring Halo back around. We're going to have to play the waiting game.
