While the Star Wars Battlefront series was a lauded addition to the galaxy far, far away, it fell to the dark side of the Force and our hopes of Battlefront 3 were diced like Darth Maul by Obi-Wan Kenobi. But, just how far along was Battlefront 3?
Away from its work on the Battlefield games, DICE is remembered for Battlefront. Although 2015's Battlefront was praised as a faithful reboot of the series, things fell off the boil when 2017's Battlefront II was embroiled in the whole microtransaction drama.
What happened to Battlefront 3?
Posting on Twitter, Naughty Dog Lead Designer and former Battlefront 3 developer Michael Barclay confirmed the threequel was much further along than we first thought. Responding to the revelation, one wrote, "Why would you do this to me".
Someone else added, "I'm honestly devastated at this. Me and my friends played the hell out of Battlefront 2. Still play it now too occasionally," while a third said, "This saddens me. BF2 was honestly a great game and did not get the credit it deserved."
Saying we were "two yards" from Battlefront 3 suggests we were achingly close to playing another spacefaring slugger. For all its faults, Battlefront 2 turned it around and delivered a pretty epic game by the time the Celebration Edition released in 2019.
Despite Battlefront using free content to win us over, it was enough of a financial success to warrant a third outing. The final nail in the coffin came when EA handed its Star Wars IP over to Respawn Entertainment. Although we'll get Jedi: Survivior, Battlefront 3 was lost in space.
Although we've had EA Motive's Star Wars Squadrons since Battlefront 2, it couldn't hold a candle to Battlefront. There's been a tonne more Star Wars stories since the last game, so just imagine an epic Siege of Mandalore chapter or DLC to capitalise on the popularity of Bo-Katan Kryze.
Will we ever see Battlefront 3?
Sadly, DICE doesn't look like it will pivot back to Battlefront any time soon. Apparently, it takes 20% more in sales than Battlefield to make Battlefront profitable. It's easier to dish out a generic Battlefield - despite the frost reception of 2042.
As DICE continues to focus on Battlefield (good luck with that), Battlefront has been put out to pasture. It's not like we're short of Star Wars games right now, with Star Wars Eclipse, Ubisoft's mystery game, Jedi: Survivor, and those continued whispers of a Mandalorian game. Still, it's sad Battlefront lost the battle.
