Sony comes down hard on ‘unofficial’ Spider-Man 2 PC release
We're still reeling from the massive Insomniac Games ransomware attack, which left the beloved PlayStation developer stripped naked for all to see. More than just plans for the upcoming Wolverine game, a stacked roadmap paints a spandex-clad future of Spider-Man and X-Men spin-offs.
Fans, developers, and journalists alike have largely rallied behind Insomniac, deciding to try and pretend they haven't seen the studio's plans from now until 2030, although it's hard not to take a peek. Insomniac looks like it'll continue its chart-topping partnership with Sony and Marvel, becoming the go-to dev for superhero games.
Unofficial Spider-Man 2 release is no more
More than just wanting to play Wolverine before it gets released (hopefully in 2025), others are tuning the leaks to their own advantage. After the Spider-Man 2 dev build leaked, it didn't take long for wannabe Insomniacs to get an unofficial PC port running at 60 FPS.
The unofficial Spider-Man 2 port already proved popular, and while there were the obvious worries about downloading a torrent and all the usual glitches you might expect, it was running pretty well. The unofficial port developers promised to iron out the kinks, but in a massive U-turn, the project is now D.O.A
As the unofficial Spider-Man 2 PC port started doing the rounds, it appeared that Sony was on the warpath. After those involved in the port were banned from Discord, they've pulled back from development. Although the port is out there in the wold, those who developed it have abandoned ship like rats from a sinking vessel.
It's unclear what happened here, but with Sony vowing to go after those who've behind the Insomniac attack, it's implied that pressure has come from above. Moral of the story is that patience is a virtue and you'll have to wait to play Spider-Man 2 on PC like it's intended.
Is Spider-Man 2 coming to PC?
Thankfully, it looks like there will be an official way to play. Despite debuting on the PS4, 2018's Spider-Man eventually came to PC in Agust 2022. This means we didn't need a ransomware attack to guess Spider-Man 2 would get the same treatment.
Although unconfirmed by Insomniac, the Install Base forums claims that documents point to Spider-Man 2's PC port costing double that of the first game, coming in at a whopping $4.6 million. Still, with development supposedly being finished in the current fiscal year, it should land sometime after April 2024.
PC players had to wait a long time until they could swing across New York City with the first game, and while things are likely to be streamlined this time around, we can't see Spider-Man 2 getting a PC release until long after all the planned DLCs have released for the PS5 version.
