Yee haw, stick on your Stetsons and reach for the shotgun because we've got a game that can scratch your Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare itch. It's been 13 years since the dead rose from the ground in Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption expansion, and now, a spiritual successor is shuffling toward us.

The frankly brilliant brainwave of spinning off from John Marston's story with a CoD Zombies-inspired arc proved to be a money-maker for the gaming giant, and to this day, is held as one of the best DLCs of all time. Sadly, as there was no Undead Nightmare 2 with RDR2, it seems the subseries has been decapitated.

Western Rye is the Undead Nightmare sequel we've always wanted

Currently causing a buzz over on Steam, Western Rye is an Undead Nightmare-esque shooter that throws you into this wild, wild, West. Nixalon Studios confirms Western Rye is inspired by Undead Nightmare (duh), Resident Evil 4, and The Witcher 3, meaning it's got some great bones to be building off.

If you're already interested, Western Rye's description explains, "Welcome to the harsh and lawless world of the Wild West, where a mysterious fever called the 'Rye Fever' has turned the once-proud frontier into a lawless wasteland." It's galloping toward an August 7 release date and has us slapping our knees with excitement.

There are also some Minecraft elements, as crafting is key to surviving in Western Rye. Players have to scavenge and construct buildings to fend off the deados. In particular, keep an eye on NPCs, as those you meet along the way can either help or hinder your fight for survival.

Red Dead fans create their own Undead Nightmare sequel

As Rockstar itself is slower than a George A. Romero zombie at giving us an Undead Nightmare sequel, players have taken it upon themselves to make one. Undead Nightmare II is available on Nexus Mods and serves as a prequel to the official game.

Our only hope is that the mythical Red Dead Redemption 3 rides into town with its own Undead Nightmare. Rockstar seems to be putting all its focus into GTA these days, while a new-gen RDR2 has reportedly been canned. For now though, we're left playing fan-made Undead Nightmare games or the likes of Western Rye
