If Helldivers 2 wasn't hard enough already, Arrowhead Game Studios has confessed that somewhere along Satan's gates there is a puppet master, pulling the strings of the Automatons to make Hades' playground even tougher.

The jaw-dropping game has been a revelation, the shooter genre's answer to Baldur's Gate 3 in the way that few players expected to have enjoyed the title so much and the numbers are far above what even the boldest fans could have guessed, even outperforming giants like Call of Duty.

But much of the fun is apparently down to one man called Joel, who is the "Game Master" behind enemies.

Helldivers 2's 'Game Master' is pulling all of the strings

Much like some kind of Dungeons and Dragons Master, "Joel" is behind all of the doings on Helldivers 2's planets,

In an interview with PC Gamer, Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt said, "We have a lot of systems built into the game where the Game Master has a lot of control over the play experience."

"It's something that we're continuously evolving based on what's happening in the game," Pilestedt continued, before detailing a few of Joel's surpluses.

The Game Master appears to be in charge of how the Automatons are performing across the universe, and Joel will often send in the cavalry of creepy critters to certain areas to make sure the difficulty levels haven't become too easy.

The interview claims that a lot of inspiration for Helldivers 2 came from Dungeons and Dragons, hence the Master, and few parts of the game are left unattended for more than a few hours without being tweaked.

Pilestedt also claimed that the omnipresent Joel even gets up in the middle of his sleep schedule to bulk out the Automatons' forces.

"There have been some sudden moments where maybe one planet was too easy or one was too hard and [Joel] had to get up in the middle of the night to give the Automatons a bit of reinforcement so the players don't take [the planet] too quickly," he said.

Amidst all of the carnage in Helldivers 2, it seems like the game will never be won, only unless Joel is warped into the game and defeated like some Dystopian warlord.
