GTA 6 beaten by unlikely game as YouTube’s most-watched trailer

GTA 6 has been climbing the ranks with its trailer, but if it wants to be the number one gaming trailer on YouTube, it's got a real colossus to dethrone.

Many gamers remember where they were when the GTA 6 trailer dropped. A lot of them, unsurprisingly, were waiting on the Grand Theft Auto YouTube channel, but you get our point.

It was a real moment in gaming history, and as the next iteration of the automotive adventure currently stands as perhaps the most hyped game in history, it's easy to see why players latched onto it and rushed the 91-second trailer into YouTube's Hall of Fame.

We've seen the GTA 6 trailer climb the ranks and beat the likes of MrBeast for the most views on a non-music YouTube video in 24 hours. But it looks like a shock champion is miles ahead. Weirder yet, it comes from the unlikeliest of places.

Subway Surfers beats GTA 6 to YouTube top-spot

It didn't take long for GTA 6's trailer to overtake the likes of Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2 to become one of the most-watched trailers on YouTube, and as it now passes Minecraft's launch trailer from 2011, it becomes one of the site's most-watched gaming trailers. STILL, it's not number one.

Somehow, the top spot on YouTube is held by the official Google Play launch trailer for Subway Surfers. It's the game you'll likely recognise best as the video on the bottom of TikTok double-video plays.

The Subway Surfers trailer stands at an absurd 361 million views, while GTA 6 trails it massively with only 169 million. GTA 6 has a long way to go if it wants to tank the obvious giant that is Subway Surfers, but with the game not due out until 2025, there's plenty of time to let it cook.

GTA 6's trailer has come a long way

GTA 6 has done a lot of work to beat away some of the biggest trailers in the world, but there are actually some other shocking titans that have made it to the list. The trailer for Angry Birds Rio stood strong at 121 million views, and Team Fortress 2's Meet the Medic trailer got an unprecedented 84 million views.

GTA 6 has smoked the lot, and now, it's gunning for the top spot. There's a lot of work to get there, but with a GTA 6 gameplay trailer surely on the way at some point, these records could soon be left in the dust. It's the armed criminals versus those sneaky kids surfing around the subway. Place your bets.
