Ferrari Launch Official Assetto Corsa Esports Championship
Ferrari has launched an official esports championship hosted on Assetto Corsa, the newest 'GT World Challenge' racing game.
Using the exclusive Ferrari 488 Challenge Evo, players will compete for a spot on Ferrari's official simulated racing team, with the events to take place between September and November 2020.
Alongside competing for a spot on Ferrari, chosen competitors will receive guidance from Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc as the competition edges into the latter stages.
After their slow start in entering the esports scene, Ferrari has put the pedal to the floor in developing their team. Being the last of the 10 F1 teams to enter esports, they turbocharged to stardom with instant success. At their first attempt, they won the F1 Esports Series in 2019, with Italian professional sim racer David Tonizza behind the wheel.
The winner of the Assetto Corsa Esports Championship will have the opportunity to compete alongside Tonizza as part of the Ferrari Driver Academy Hublot Esports team in 2021.
For the first series, it will be restricted to just European entrants, with the scope to open this up globally in 2021. With this year's series played online due to the coronavirus pandemic, Ferrari hope to hold it a live event in the future once restrictions are lifted.
This follows in the footsteps of Ford who have recently announced that they will offer a place on their esports team, 'Team Fordzilla', to the winner of their Fordzilla Cup on Forza Motorsport 7 event.
Assetto Corsa offers a different racing style to the likes of Forza Motorsport 7, boasting the most intuitive steering feel and higher grip levels allowing players to have a more consistent lap time, therefore offering a truer representation of a players results. Whilst each racing esport offers realistic graphics and controls, players can fluctuate through various titles, with the best simulated drivers heading to each title to compete in such events.
