Dead Space 3 is one of the most divisive games in the franchise, partly due to the focus on action rather than horror.

In an interview, one of the Dead Space 3 producers said he would like to “redo Dead Space 3 almost completely” if he was able to, with an entirely new plot and character focus.

A former Dead Space 3 producer would change a lot about the game if he could

Dead Space 3 writer and co-producer Chuck Beaver spoke to Bribo on the CaptainBribo podcast about what he would change about the divisive game, especially in the current era of Dead Space remakes.

He said: “Now in this remake territory I would redo Dead Space 3 almost completely, but I would keep the lore beat it’s predicated on, keep the lore you find out, and I would have Ellie there but in a different relationship [with Isaac] and redo the entire main story.”

Beaver also said that he would completely remove the love triangle between Isaac, Ellie, and Robert, instead focusing on a “Broken Isaac” in the third instalment.

Beaver and Bribo discussed how, if they could rewrite Dead Space 3, they would place most of the focus on Isaac, making him an unreliable narrator and implementing a co-op mechanic that would add in a “shadow Isaac” which experiences completely different visuals at certain parts in the game.

Devs were reportedly unable to make Dead Space 3 a horror game from the start

While several interesting ideas were thrown out over the course of the two hour podcast episode, one of the most surprising points that were raised is that Dead Space 3 was never going to be a horror game.

According to Beaver, the team wasn’t "allowed to make a horror game from the beginning."

He said: “The plan [with Dead Space 3] was that we’d expand into other gameplay genres. All those bits together not only didn’t generate a new audience, they lost the old audience.”

This seems to be one of the main reasons that Dead Space 3 was less successful than the previous iterations in the series.

Fans are hopeful that a Dead Space 3 remake could be on the way, especially given the success of the recent Dead Space release.
