Nintendo is lacing up its gloves and jumping into the ring with some interesting Super Smash Bros. Ultimate details about the latest DLC character and one that bit the dust before they ever made it into the hero brawler. Smash Bros. Ultimate is the latest in a long line of Smash games that stretches back to Super Smash Bros. in 1999. Ultimate started with an impressive roster of 74 base characters, which has been bolstered by new additions through the ongoing lineup of DLC characters.

Pirhana Plant kicked off as the first newcomer, followed by the likes of Persona 5's Joker and the duo of Rare's Banjo and Kazooie. January 2021 brings another favourite to the fold with Fire Emblem's Byleth flexing their muscles. While there's plenty of buzz surrounding Byleth's debut, it sounds like someone else was originally supposed to take his spot.

Cut Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character? Who was it?

Former Game Informer editor Imran Khan posted on ResetEra and shared a few secrets about what did and didn't make the final cut. The latest DLC features Byleth, but according to Khan, Byleth's moveset originally belonged to another character that was given the boot. Although Khan refused to reveal who the cut character was, he said their plans were axed when negotiations between both sides fell though.

When it comes to Byleth, Khan reiterated they were always supposed to be part of Ultimate, however, the stars aligned for them to replace the mystery character that was cut. The reveals don't end there as Khan also nixed the idea that Monster Hunter characters could appear further down the Smash Brosline. Khan explained Monster Hunter developers are against the idea of their characters crossing over to other franchises. For the time being, don't expect to see them taking part in the ever-expanding world of Smash

Cut Smash Bros Ultimate character: What else was revealed?

As a final dump of information, Khan said Nintendo staple Min Min's addition was easy due to her place in this world, whereas, Final Fantasy's Sephiroth was cheaper than normal because Square Enix wanted to cash in on the success of Smash. With this in mind, it makes sense that we got two Final Fantasy characters in such quick succession.

While Khan's industry background means he's probably in the know, we need to take all of the above with a pinch of salt until someone from Nintendo gives it the official nod. If it's all true, it sounds like Byleth is in a lucky position. Sadly, we might never know who was cut. 2021 dives deeper into the second Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Pass as the number of empty slots continues to shrink. Let's see how Byleth fits in among the rest.
