Knowing how to change the clothing and weapons of your Starfield companions as you progress through is essential, because you can make them much more effective with new equipment and items.

Like most role-playing games, Starfield lets you take your companions along for the ride either by following you directly, or by being stationed on your ship as you travel around space.

The game lets you focus on the companion you like the most, so if you've chosen your main companion, it's worth learning how to change their clothing and weapons too.

Changing a companion's clothing & weapons

To change companion clothing and weapons in Starfield, you will need to put the items in their inventory and then equip them for them.

To do this, start by speaking to your companion of choice and then selecting the option to trade gear with them. This will bring up an inventory screen, and by pressing the highlighted button at the bottom of the screen (Q on PC), you can switch between yours and their inventory.

Move the gear you no longer want from your inventory into the companion's inventory by selecting them, and then switch back to their screen.

You can now hover over the specific item you want your companion to use, and press the equip key (B on PC) to assign it to them. It's worth noting there is a bug that will show your character on this screen instead of the companion, but pressing equip will make them use the clothing or weapon.

It's worth giving your companions better armour and weapons whenever you can, and you'll need to ensure you give them the appropriate ammo, as otherwise, they can't use any weapons.
