The companions of Baldur's Gate 3 are an eclectic bunch, making the decision of who to bring with you all the harder. Baldur's Gate 3 is a sprawling game with too much to do in one playthrough.

Companions are included in that, as there are more of them than you can recruit in one run through the game. Here is everything you need to know about Baldur's Gate 3 companions, their classes, and how and where to recruit them.

Where can you find all the potential companions in Baldur's Gate 3

A big part of the early game is deciding which companions to bring to your party. Some are more easily come across than others, so here are the locations of each known companion in the game.

Companion Race and class Location
Shadowheart Half-Elf Cleric

One of three locations:

  • At the crash site if freed on the Nautiloid
  • If not, can be found at the entrance to the Dank Crypt
  • If none of the above, you will find Shadowheart at Druid Grove
Astarion Elf Rogue Head east from the crash site, and speak to him after defeating the intellect devourers (he will jump you, you need to talk your way out)
Gale Human Wizard Head north from the crash site and you will find Gale beside the Roadside Cliffs waypoint
Lae'zel Githyanki Fighter Further north passed Gale, you will find Lae'zel in a cage, trapped by Tieflings. Shoot the cage down to free her
Wyll Human Warlock Make your way to Druid Grove to find Wyll training children
Karlach Tiefling Barbarian Go west from Druid Grove and cross the bridge to Blighted Village, then immediately go north. Find a dog called Scratch, then cross the nearby river and follow the path to find Karlach
Halsin Elf Druid Head to the Goblin Camp and you will find Halsin trapped in the Worg Pen. You can free him there, or defeat the Goblins and he will free himself, either way, he will head to Druid Grove
Minthara Drow Paladin Visit Minthara at the Gobin Camp and agree to join their attack on Druid Grove. After wiping out everyone there, speak with Minthara to get her on your side

For the most part, recruiting companions is very straightforward. Most of the available companions require little more than to be asked and they will join your party. Some require a bit more effort, and some will require a significant decision to be made.

For example, Shadowheart, Gale, and Wyll really just need to be asked to join your team. Astarion and Lae'zel require slightly more effort; Astarion will attack you and you have to convince him to stand down and join you, Lae'zel gets captured by Tieflings and must be freed to recruit.

Karlach has a few more steps to complete to get her on your side. When you find her, she is being hunted by a group of Paladins. To get her into your party, you will need to help her fight off the Paladins. You could also side with the Paladins if you so choose.

Halsin and Minthara are opposing companions. Neither are "origin characters" like the above, so their stories may not be quite as deep. For Halsin, you need to attack the Goblin Camp, defeat Minthara and the others, and free Halsin from the Worg Pen. After that, you can find him in Druid Grove.

The flip side of this is to go to Minthara, and agree to help her attack on Druid Grove. This will take you to the grove where you will slaughter everyone there. Halsin will want nothing to do with you, but Minthara can then be recruited.
