The fall and rise of Cyberpunk 2077 is something that gaming scholars will surely study for decades. Not since the surprise revival of No Man's Sky have we seen a game manage to turn it around quite like Cyberpunk 2077, with CD Projekt Red's sci-fi shooter finally firing on all cylinders.

Given that CDPR was largely known for its work on The Witcher games, it set itself an absurdly high bar with the promises of tackling the tabletop Cyberpunk series. Numerous delays and a frothing fan base led to fears the game was released before it was cooked in 2020, and by all accounts, we should've stuck it back in the oven.

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition has an added bonus for Xbox Series X

The upcoming release of the Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition brings things full circle, finally delivering the game we thought we'd be getting three years ago. As well as a truly new-gen title to push the potential of the Xbox Series and PlayStation 5, you get the added bonus of the bumper 2.0 update and Phantom Liberty DLC.

Ultimate Editions are all the rage these days, but when it comes to Cyerberpunk 2077, it's breaking an obscure Xbox record. As reported by IGN, the Xbox Series X Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will span a whopping three discs.

A spokesperson explained how each version will work for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC: "The Xbox Series X box contains three discs with the base game and expansion." This confirms that the Xbox Series X release is the only one that contains a physical copy of Phantom Liberty across any platform.

The spokesperson continued to clarify, "The PlayStation 5 box includes a game disc with Cyberpunk 2077 and a code for the expansion to be redeemed in the PlayStation Store," adding, "The PC version comes with a GOG code for both the base game and the expansion."

As for why the Xbox Series X is the only one to get the lucrative physical copy of Phantom Liberty, they concluded, "The reason for the difference in how the Phantom Liberty is included in the Ultimate Edition is due to technical requirements specific to each platform."

What's next for Cyberpunk

Previously, we thought Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3: Deluxe Edition would be the first triple disc release for the Xbox Series. However, as that comes out in Q1 of 2024, it means the Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition's December 5 release leapfrogs it to be the first.

There's a sense of justice that Cyberpunk 2077 gets the crown, as we know the end is nigh. Following the release of the Phantom Liberty DLC, CDPR confirmed work will now turn to the unnamed Cyberpubnk 2077 sequel. Game Director Gabe Amatangelo has vowed to move forward, although we don't know what that involves.

Whether we get a direct sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, jump into the distant future, or head somewhere other than Night City, this world is only just starting. Add the next game to a much-hyped live-action adaptation, and it's hoped the botched release of Cyberpunk 2077 is just a rare CDPR fumble.
