Pokimane Calls Out Twitch Streamers For 'Greediness'
Anis “Pokimane” Imane has made a massive name for herself on Twitch and has become something of a figurehead of the streaming site’s culture. She’s done incredibly well as an online entertainer, and has come to embody Twitch’s success as an entertainment platform. But, it doesn’t seem she’s entirely happy with every aspect of the site’s usage and culture. In fact, she’s coming straight for its neck by calling into question the morality of some streamers’ attitudes to donations and subs.
Pokimane’s Accusations Of ‘Greediness’
In a recent stream, Pokimane addressed streamers who use sub-goals and persuade viewers to subscribe to them. “People who have like 50k subs and they’re saying ‘let’s get to 51k!’ all the time… I do personally find that a little bit off-putting”, she starts. “To think like, you make so much money, and you must be very, very well-aware of this as being such an easy and clear marketing tactic to try to convince people to give you even more money? That’s crazy. Is that really necessary?”
It’s a tactic that often rubs viewers the wrong way, and when streamers push their sub-goals too hard, it makes it clear that they’re in the Twitch game for the money.
“You have to consider the fact that when you’re streaming, a lot of the wealth you’re accumulating is from other people’s pockets”, she continues. “Typically people who make less money than you. That’s why if I don’t need the money to sustain myself, I don’t wanna further incentivise, or try to use these little marketing things to like, squeeze just a little more money out of people.”
Pokimane has made good on this promise so far, most notably by capping her stream donations at only $5 due to an incredible influx of extremely generous donations. She is currently sat at 7.6 million followers, and has almost 9,000 paid subscribers.
She states herself during the stream that she doesn’t like to say anything potentially controversial, but she might have dropped herself in it with this one. A few viewers in her chat call out popular streamer Mizkif for deploying similar tactics, but who knows, maybe this is a statement that Pokimane ends up getting away with.
