In the war of the consoles, there’s a lot of opinions. We can’t help ourselves. Whether you’re exclusively Xbox, or fully sitting in the PlayStation camp, it’s usually a hill you’re willing to die on. Unfortunately for those of you who are Xbox stans, the PlayStation has cemented itself as the best-selling home console brand ever - according to The Guinness World Records.

The world record was actually won by Sony in 2019, but with the unprecedented success of the PlayStation 5, it’s now even more successful. Sorry, Microsoft.

The original PlayStation sold over 102.5 million units, with the next console, the almighty PlayStation 2, absolutely killing it by selling an eye-watering 155 million. The PS3 wasn’t quite as popular, with 87.4 million, but the PS4 has managed to shift 113.5 million so far.

With the PS5 selling between 2.1 and 2.5 million units worldwide on its two staggered launch dates - it’s safe to assume that they’re pretty happy with how it went.

In 2019, the Guinness World Records’ team presented Sony with a plaque. CEO Jim Ryan and former CEO Ken Kutaragi were in attendance to accept the record. The latter said: "Back when we were developing the original PlayStation; we had the ambition to sell 1 million units.

“I look back on that now with nostalgia. We launched the PlayStation platform with the aim of changing the face of entertainment. Receiving this award today, I feel the support of the players who have enjoyed our consoles over the years, and as the father of the PlayStation, I can see it has a bright future."

Well he wasn’t wrong, was he? The success of PlayStation appears not to be slowing down any time soon - as anyone who tried (and failed) to get their hands on a PS5 in 2020 will tell you.
