A super-sleuth on Reddit named Darth_Vaper883 has revealed a patent submitted by Sony that indicates the Dualshock 5 controller for the upcoming PlayStation 5 may have wireless charging capabilities.

The patent submission describes the charger as; “a wireless charging adapter that can snap onto a computer game controller...can be inductively coupled to a charging base to wirelessly recharge a battery in the controller.”

The patent information also goes into detail about using the controller whilst charging; “the adapter also can include keys that mirror keys on the controller so that a gamer can remove the adapter with controller from the charging base, keep the adapter on the controller, and use both the controller keys and adapter keys to control a computer game.”

If the Dualshock 5 does indeed end up with wireless charging capabilities, they may not be popular amongst all users of the PS5, as one Reddit user comments;

“Kind of hoping they don’t end up using this. The patent seems to indicate its inductive and not over the air wireless. So what’s the point? Wouldn’t an inductive charging clip for the controller be a lot more cumbersome than a USB C cable? Especially because inductive charging is usually worse for the battery life.”

Only time will tell if Sony will implement its idea for a wireless charging pad for the Dualshock 5, but we won’t have long to wait, as the PlayStation 5 is due for release in December 2020.
