Old console games are an enchanting paradise. Often discarded due to advancement in technology with a desire for cutting edge graphics and smoother gameplay, the old games hold a magical key, capable of unlocking the deepest and most wonderful childhood memories.

For me, as a sportaholic and a devotee of the wizards and witchcraft, I will never forget getting sent off on FIFA 03 for slide tackling the goalkeeper with Michael Owen before switching disks and memory cards and spending an hour or six wandering the corridors of Hogwarts Castle with pixelated Hagrid.

Others may remember the more classical games like Tekken 3, Final Fantasy VII, Gran Turismo 2, or even Street Fighter, titles that have aged like a fine wine or Stilton cheese.

Well, it may be time to get out your Mrs Pacman feather duster and do digging in the archives of your loft, as the latest patent from Sony hints towards the developers allowing backwards compatibility for any PlayStation game ever made, regardless of the generation of console they were purchased on.

Whilst the patent doesn't explicitly say that all-generation backwards compatibility is its desire, it outlines that it wants to award trophies for emulated games. The only titles in which Sony would be emulating in 2021 would be legacy games, like those on PS3, PS2, and even the PS1.

The patent states: "This disclosure relates generally to a system and method of awarding trophies in previously released or sold video games, without modifying the original game. More specifically, the present invention relates to defining, detecting and awarding a set of trophies for the players of the previously released games."

It's not quite a confirmation, but I've already got one hand in the loft searching for my box of PS1 classics. Always knew they'd turn out to be useful.
