Gamer Swaps His PS5 For A Nintendo 64

The debate of which is the best gaming console of all time rages on. Is it the SEGA Mega Drive with Sonic the Hedgehog, the PlayStation 2 with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the Nintendo Wii with Super Mario Galaxy, or Xbox 360 with Halo 3? As we head into the next generation of games consoles with the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and rumours of a Nintendo Switch Pro, some players refuse to let go of the past. This has led one nostalgic superfan to sell his PS5, just so he can buy a Nintendo 64.

For many, we need to go back to 1996 and a certain little black box that packed a punch. When it comes to the Nintendo 64, those of us who are a certain age will undoubtedly think the N64 is the king of Peach's Castle in terms of gaming consoles. Boasting everything from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to GoldenEye 007Super Mario 64 to Perfect Dark, you also had Mario Kart 64Banjo-KazooieMajora's Mask (do we need to carry on?), and more. More than just offering up great titles for its own era, the N64 delivered what are held as some of the best games of all time.

Why did one gamer sell his PS5 for a Nintendo 64?

Posting on ResetEra, the user known as Traxus wrote, "It all started last year sometime when I found an old broken-ass CRT television by the side of the road. Conjuring up images from a lost time, the haunted relic called out to me, much like sirens of the old tales enticed unwary sailors to their doom.

"I put it in my trunk, unleashing a cursed chain of events that would lead to me rebuilding and augmenting my childhood Nintendo 64 collection, almost breaking my back hunting down a much nicer (but also free) 27" Sony Trinitron, and selling my PS5 Digital Edition (for a small profit) to support my crippling addiction, much to my wife's chagrin". They don't reveal how much they sold their PS5 for or how much their N64 setup cost, but we're guessing there was more than enough spare change to pick up some classic cartridges.

Considering the PS5 has been so hard to get hold of in both digital and standard form, it's a bold move to give up a PS5 so soon after you got your hands on it. While some of you are probably screaming at your screen and asking "why?", there's actually a lot of sense behind the move.

Why would you sell your PS5 for a Nintendo 64?

Once you've rattled through Sony exclusives like Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon's Souls, there isn't a lot to keep you tethered to your PS5 right now. Although there are upcoming releases like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and a hopeful release for God of War: Ragnarok, alongside the PS4 title-packed PS Plus Collection featuring Resident Evil 7, The Last of Us, and Batman: Arkham Knight, Traxus' idea is to buy the PS5 further down the line when the hype has died out.

Yes, 2021 looks like it's another huge year for gaming, but we're sure Traxus can hold off until next year as they take a trip down memory lane with their kids and the N64. Let's also remember that there's a boom in retro consoles and games, meaning the price of the N64 continues to climb as the PS5 will inevitably drop before becoming its own nostalgic system in another 25 years.

Unfortunately, Traxus doesn't reveal which games have come in the collection. It's safe to assume GoldenEye and Zelda are in there somewhere. Citing the N64 as the "best" retro console out there (well duh), we at least know they've been playing Super Mario 64 with their son. In terms of places to start, the 1996 platformer is about as iconic as they come. By the sounds of it, buying an N64 is just the start of their mission to introduce their kids to the retro consoles that made our lives back in the day. Here's hoping they get to toss Bowser to his fiery doom before too long.
