We can barely move for remakes, remasters, and revamps of games, but it seems to be working. Capcom's 2023 remake of 2005's Resident Evil has been nominated for Game of the Year at the Game Awards, and to be honest, we wouldn't be surprised if Bethesda released another Skyrim before The Elder Scrolls 6 releases.

As console generations rattle by and technology advances quicker than devs can handle, even modern games are left feeling like a last-gen title in a matter of years. We saw Cyberpunk 2077 come back to life thanks to its new-gen update, and now, it looks like 2020's The Last of Us Part II could be getting a fresh lick of paint.

PS5 The Last of Us Part II upgrade leaked

Naughty Dog might've once been known for Crash Bandicoot and Uncharted, but that all changed when the developer released The Last of Us in 2013. The original is rightly known as one of the best video games of all time, and with the bar set so high, many feel 2020's sequel sadly fell short. For others, it's an even better outing.

Despite The Last of Us Part II only being three years old, there have been whispers of a native PlayStation 5 upgrade to bring it into the next generation of video games. Now, Twitter account PlayStation Game Size suggests a PS5-native The Last of Us Part II has been added to the PlayStation Network.

If this is the case, we could realistically be facing the imminent release of a new-gen The Last of Us Part II. We've heard a lot about the game getting a director's cut re-release similar to Ghost of Tsushima, and with The Last of Us Part II releasing just months before the PS5, it makes sense.

The Last of Us Part II upgrade is nothing new

For those who keep their ear close to the ground in gaming, you'll know the idea of a new-gen The Last of Us Part II is nothing new. In January 2022, Tom Henderson claimed Part II's multiplayer and a mythical director's cut were coming. We know the multiplayer has hit a speed bump, but things could be going better for the director's cut.

Artist Marj Pajarillo seemingly spoiled the surprise on his LinkedIn, while composer Gustavo Santaolalla let slip that an "enhanced" version of the game was on the way. Following the success of the remastered The Last of Us Part I to bring the original game up to date, it makes sense that the sequel follows in its footsteps.

Others are hopeful The Last of Us Part II is coming to PC, and with The Game Awards just around the corner, we could save the announcement for December 8. If we get to see Joel and Ellie's tragic tale boosted to the best of its capabilities, don't pretend you won't be playing The Last of Us Part II's director's cut.
