A Take-Two patent suggests that animations in Grand Theft Auto 6 will be more realistic and dynamic than ever before.
The patent is for new locomotive technology which seems to use building blocks for small aspects of character movement that can be stacked in different ways to create a variety of animations.
A Reddit user has uncovered a patent which could mean GTA 6 animations are more realistic and dynamic
Reddit user Tobbelobben30 took to the GTA 6 subreddit earlier today to share that he had discovered a patent titled ‘System And Method For Virtual Character Locomotion’ on the LinkedIn page of Tobias Kleanthous, the former lead AI / gameplay programmer at Rockstar Games.
The patent seems to have since been removed however can be read without images on Justia Patents.
Tobbelobben30 said: “Based on this patent, it seems like they're using a clever system. They've built a library of small building blocks for character movements. These blocks can be combined in various ways to create a wide range of animations.
“For instance, think about a character in the game walking in the rain, feeling tired, or getting injured. Instead of designing separate animations for each of these situations, they use these building blocks to put together the character's movements naturally.
“This means GTA 6 can have more diverse and lifelike animations. So, when you play GTA 6, you'll see characters moving in ways that match the weather, their energy level, and their injuries.
“This makes the game feel more immersive. It's like having characters that can adapt to different situations, making the game world feel more real and thrilling.”
GTA 6 could have some of the best visual experiences yet
This is not the first patent to come out for GTA 6 which shows that the team are working tirelessly to create some great animation.
A second patent, entitled "System And Method For Virtual Navigation In A Gaming Environment," was uncovered in September, and similarly aims to improve the player experience.
The patent filing said: "In view of the foregoing, a need exists for an improved system for virtual navigation in an effort to overcome the aforementioned obstacles and deficiencies of conventional video game systems.”
The patent seems to suggest that offloading most of the virtual navigation work to the cloud could massively improve in game simulations.
While the patent is confusing in its own way, a Reddit user shared their insight onto what the patent would mean for players.
Reddit user Jaloss, said: “It’s essentially a method to improve vehicle AI when driving.
“Currently, when NPCs drive on the road, they can sense a few cars around them to determine crashes or other things to drive around. This is “dumb” AI as it has very few factors to take into account, and requires a lot of computational resources. This is why vehicles despawn when far away, to free up the CPU.
“Personally I find this very exciting. It builds an image of a denser world, with many variable environmental conditions. It remains to be seen to what degree this will be implemented, either way it’s a great find!
“This also seems to give the idea that weather and changing conditions will have a large impact on the Gameworld.”
While patents have been filed, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they will be used in the game when it does eventually make itself known.
