HBO's The Last Of Us Ellie Actor Has Never Played The Game

Bella Ramsey has the honour of playing Ellie in HBO's The Last of Us, but apparently, the actor has a very good reason for having never played the games.

HBO sure delivers some banging TV shows. Whether it be the fiery demises of Game of Thrones or the murderous robots of Westworld, the network is held as the jewel in the TV crowd. So, to say we're excited for an upcoming live-action The Last of Us, would be an understatement.

Turning Naughty Dog's acclaimed survival horror into a series is no small feat, however, the first trailer reiterates those promises that it will be a faithful adaptation of the games. Although you might imagine lead actors Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal have been brushing up on Ellie and Joel, it turns out at least one of the former Thrones alumni hasn't picked up a controller to play.

Why Hasn't Bella Ramsey Played The Last Of Us?

Preparation is key to any role, and we imagine not having played The Last of Us might be a bit like auditioning for House of the Dragon without knowing the Targaryen family tree. Still, Ramsey says she's never played 2013's The Last of Us or its 2020 sequel... with good reason.

When asked whether she'd played the games, Ramsey told USA Today, "I was actually encouraged not to [play it]. After my first audition, they asked me, 'Have you played it?' And I said 'nope,' and they said, 'Keep it that way.' This seemingly implies Ramsey wouldn't have known the major beats before reading the scripts, although given The Last of Us' legacy, it's been hard to avoid spoilers over the years.

Ramsey isn't completely disconnected from the world of the cordyceps outbreak. Explaining that she watched some gameplay on YouTube to get a sense of this world, she added: "I'm so excited for it to come out – it was such a big part of my life. I shot for a whole year, which is quite a long time when you've only lived for 19 years." With HBO's The Last of Us Season 1 being a 10-episode order, we only imagine it'll cover some of the first game.

Will There Be The Last Of Us Season 2?

Assuming The Last of Us will be the hit we know it can be, viewers are expecting it to return for a multi-season order. Even if we polished off adapting both games, the fact we've already seen small differences and hints at the world outside of what Naughty Dog gave us means the story could go anywhere. After all, The Walking Dead has long been telling its own story that's different to the comics.

Speaking about the idea of multiple season, Joel video game voice actor Tory Baker said something to Fandom about "three or four seasons," but bear in mind, he's not exactly going to have much say in it. The Last of Us is hopefully too big to fail and we can't see it bowing out after just 10 episodes. The question is, if Ramsey hasn't played The Last of Us Part II, does she know about THAT big golf club scene?
