To quote Carl Johnson himself, "Ah sh*t, here we go again." Although all eyes are on what's next for the Grand Theft Auto series thanks to the long-awaited announcement of GTA 6, others just can't get enough of that sweet haze of nostalgia that's helped keep the series alive since 1997.
It's no big secret that although the release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition was a financial hit for Take-Two Interactive, it was a critical bloodbath. The beloved GTA: San Andreas was part of the bundle, however, things weren't looking great for the 2004 favourite. Thankfully, a group of fans are here to right the wrongs with their own San Andreas prequel.
What Is GTA 1991?
Fan projects are nothing new, and as Fallout: New California or the eight-year development of the Resident Evil 4 HD have shown, they can be a truly amazing experience. Taking the well-laid blueprint of San Andreas, a group is showing us a different side of the story with a prequel to CJ's time with the Grove Street Families.
Speaking to GamesRadar, modder and co-creator deltaCJ said, "We're going all out, you know. We want it to be everything. We want it to be Rockstar quality. We can't do subpar." Explaining what fans can expect, GTA 1991 is effectively the game's own San Andreas Stories. GTA 1991 focuses on a pre-existing character called Little Devil. Throwing back to San Andreas, Little Devil was mentioned by Sweet Johnson as someone who'd died at some point between 1987 and 1992.
With Little Devil selected as the main protagonist, Big Devil (also dead by the events of San Andreas) will accompany his brother on a mission of vengeance against a rival gang member called Top Dawg - who has killed their cousin. It's all typically GTA and fits surprisingly easily into Rockstar's official lore, and yet, adds more characters, weapons, vehicles, and an impressive 10-hour playtime.
When Will Be Able To Play GTA 1991
Another USP is a realistic drug system. "I want players to be able to buy and sell drugs, I want them to be able to buy locations to sell from, be that crack houses or less run-down properties," said deltaCJ. "That might be a case of clearing out crack houses and taking out rival gangs, taking over the property and then having people come in to buy from you. I want players to be able to grow contacts on the street and be able to sell on corners."
Remembering that both GTA III and Vice City had prequels in the form of Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories, we've spent 18 years waiting for San Andreas to get the same treatment. If you're already sold on GTA 1991, you can keep an eye on progress via the GTAForums site. Better yet, the team is set to release the first level as a demo on February 26. All you need to play is the PC version of San Andreas.
