We've known for some time now that Fortnite is largely aimed at kids. Though anyone can enjoy the battle royale favourite, the silliness and cartoon antics that players can get up to in the game while dressing up as their celebrity faves and doing goofy dances appeal to the younger crowd.

It's a maddening cocktail that seems to make perfect sense even in the face of all the gunfire. But, it looks like things could be about to change, as Epic Games is gearing up to age-restrict some of the content in its creative modes.

Epic Games has revealed that it's going to be introducing individual age ratings for all of the content on Fortnite's back, both created by players and the company itself, as it takes another step into this new era of Fortnite.

The Unreal Editor for Fortnite tools arrived in May 2023, introducing the new Creative 2.0. Epic has been referring to the current state of Fortnite as a transition into a "multi-game ecosystem" while the game expands into a platform for game creation as well as the iconic battle royale.

As reported by Eurogramer, Epic has announced that starting on October 16, it'll be using the system developed by the International Age Rating Coalition to manage content in the game.

ESRB president claims Fortnite is becoming a 'broader ecosystem'

"By implementing the IARC rating system within Fortnite, Epic continues to elevate its commitment to providing families with tools to make informed decisions about which experiences are appropriate for their children," reads a statement from Patricia Vance, the ESRB president and chairperson for the IARC.

"As Fortnite evolves from its Battle Royale roots into a broader ecosystem containing a variety of content from Epic and other creators, it's especially important that parents have a clear understanding of what their children want to access."

It's a pretty wild change to the game (or should we say, platform) that will help to protect the battle royale from getting cranked up to an 18 rating, thanks to some Creative maps. Although we've seen maps inspired by everything from Only Up! to The Hunger Games, Epic is future-proofing itself against potential problems.
