Blizzard Entertainment Are Looking To Make 'New Game Types' After Diablo 2
It appears that Blizzard Entertainment is set to sail in a new direction following the release of their highly-anticipated remaster of Diablo 2 (named 'Resurrected'). Changing the course of their masts, Blizzard has admitted that they intend to work on "new games" following Diablo's release, opting to stray away from any more remastered titles - for now.
The developer branch of Activision is best known for their work on Warcraft (including World of Warcraft), Diablo, StarCraft, Overwatch, and Hearthstone. Back in 2015, the company formed a 'Classic Games Division' which focused on remastering some of their older titles which resulted in StarCraft: Remastered (2017), Warcraft III: Reforged (2020), and the aforementioned Diablo II: Resurrected.
Now, it appears that they have run the division into the ground, with Vice President, Allen Adham, telling CNET that "It's worth pointing out we're now pretty much out of things to remaster," before adding "So going forward, you can expect to see some new stuff".
Blizzard hasn't brought out a standalone title since 1995, heavily focusing on a string of their major series. The Super Nintendo Entertainment System played host to Justice League Task Force a fighting game involving DC character depicted in the comics. Their only other standalone games came in the year prior, where they released The Death and Return of Superman and Blackthorne.
With Activision tending to outsource the development of FPS shooters to developers such as Treyarch, Infinity Ward, Raven Software, and Sledgehammer Games (all four devs behind the Call of Duty franchise), the likelihood is that Blizzard may look to stick to the single-player titles.
Adham added, "But just to be crystal clear, our development pipeline today is as rich as it's ever been. And we have new teams working on new games, new game types".
With Overwatch 2 also in the pipeline for 2022 though, we may not see an original Blizzard game until next year or beyond.
