Overwatch is finally making the comeback it's needed for some time. Fans of the game have thought it "dead" for some time, but as is typical with titles that critics think to be done and dusted, it simply isn't.

The hero shooter has had a passionate audience for years now, and as Overwatch 2 begins its multiplayer beta, it seems closer than ever. Thank heavens, because it feels like a lifetime ago that the game was announced. Now, it looks like the sequel might not be all that Blizzard has in mind for the story of the Omnic uprising.

Is Blizzard Making An Overwatch Shooter Spin-Off?

One LinkedIn profile has hinted that Blizzard is working on a brand new shooter, and rumour has it that it could be a more linear spin-off from Overwatch. The Lead Game Designer at Blizzard recently revealed on LinkedIn that he was the "Lead Game Designer on an unannounced FPS PVP project," and his talent was put well to use.

"Over three years, work involved managing Level, UX, Combat and Systems design, guiding new level building technology, aligning teams on the vision of the project, hiring and designing gameplay systems," says Kristopher Howl. Interesting. The game could be pretty far along at this stage, but it bears the question - what could this outing be?

Could This Mystery Shooter Be An Overwatch Spin-Off?

It's thought that this upcoming game could be a spin-off of Overwatch, potentially exploring the violence of the Omnic uprising explored in the game's narrative. There could also be the chance for more of the missions of Blackwatch and Talon to be explored - if the mystery title wanted to delve a little further into the darkness of the story.

Of course, there's little to go on in terms of proving these rumours. For all we know, Blizzard could be branching out to add a new IP to its already impressive belt of franchises. Given that it's being produced by Blizzard, there's every chance that the game will take some mechanical notes from the Overwatch games at the very least.

If Blizzard has proved anything over the years, it's that it's adept at creating an expansive roster of characters and suitably massive lore surrounding them. A new Overwatch game even before the release of Overwatch 2 is still exciting, and we're intrigued to see what this project turns out to be - whether it be familiar or not.
