Bethesda Game Studios is carving a new path, and just after Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax Media, there are fresh reports that a new unannounced Bethesda title is on the way. More than being something related to the upcoming (and long-awaited) release of Starfield or the previously announced Elder Scrolls 6, it sounds like the critically acclaimed studio is tinkering away on something else.

As studios go, there are few that have as much of a legacy as Bethesda. Known for delivering everything from Doom to WolfensteinFallout to The Elder Scrolls, it boasts some of the best IPs out there and some of the biggest gaming franchises still running. With players looking forward to the future of each of these, any sniff of a new job at Bethesda Game Studios rightly has fans digging for as much information as they can find, or possibly a hint that their favourite franchise is going to get a new lease of life.

What is the unannounced Bethesda title?

A job listing on the official Bethesda site is looking for a Server Engineer to join the team. Daily tasks include working with other engineers, architects, designers, and writers. You'll need a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science (or equivalent) and 5+ years in the software development industry. The full description explains, "Bethesda Game Studios is seeking a qualified Server Engineer to help create and improve systems. Come join our experienced team of developers who have a legacy of creating AAA games. This is a terrific opportunity to work with some of the best people in the games industry".

Considering Starfield is the first original series in 25 years, we're not expecting another brand-new IP to come snapping at its heels. If this is the case, it's likely one of the firm favourites from the back catalogue is set for some new material or a possible revamp. Theorists were quick to jump on the bandwagon that this could be the first real hint of Fallout 5, but we're calling that one out straight away.

With the job being set in Texas, we can narrow down the options a little. The Bethesda Austin studio is known for assisting on the maligned Fallout 76. It's likely that a major game like Fallout 5 would be handled by the HQ in Maryland. Others have pointed out it could be a big update for Fallout 76 or possibly a smaller mobile game in the vein of Fallout Shelter

When could we see the unannounced Bethesda title?

If you're hoping to jump into this wide new world before the end of the year, there's a slight problem. Bethesda doesn't exactly have the best track record for churning out its games on a quick basis. Although there are wild reports we'll get to play Starfield this year, the game was first announced in 2018, and we've seen literally no development. Even though Bethesda is notoriously cagey about its projects, we're guessing this mysterious project is a long way off.

Either way, the idea of an unannounced title means something could be just around the corner in terms of announcements. It just so happens E3 is next month and is destined to be one of the biggest in the expo's history. After sitting out 2020 due to COVID-19, the gaming announcements are set to come in hard and fast for this year's E3. Added to this, it's the first time Bethesda will fall under the Microsoft umbrella, meaning we're expecting big things. Even though fans are in the dark for now, we're excited to find out what Bethesda is brewing.
