Tekken 8 patch 1.02.01 is here with a handful of small changes, some new and expanded features, and something finally being done about all these cheaters in ranked. Tekken 8 has had an unfortunate issue with players who would rather disconnect and run away than lose a ranked match, and until now there have been no consequences in the game for this behaviour.

Exactly how these punishments work isn't totally clear, and it seems there is more to come, but here is what we know about the new patch coming to Tekken 8, what it changes, and how it tackles the cheater situation.

How does the patch deal with cheaters?

According to the patch notes, this update will target players in high ranks who have been reported as cheating in ranked matches. These players will have their ranks reduced back to Beginner and will be removed from the leaderboards.

This seems like a slap on the wrist for cheaters who could just quickly return to cheating and ascend the ranks again, so it seems likely that there's more to it than just a rank reset.

Recently, Tekken Game Director Katsuhiro Harada revealed on social media that they have accumulated a spreadsheet of known cheaters which contains many pluggers (players who intentionally disconnect mid-match to avoid a loss) and they plan to ban many from the game.

The topic of banning cheaters has come up a lot recently, with Harada stating on a recent stream that there are legal issues to consider when it comes to banning players, particularly across different countries with different consumer laws.

Cheaters, particularly pluggers, are a difficult thing to prevent. Hopefully, more consequences will deter potential cheaters and make the game better for everyone.

When does the patch go live?

Patch 1.02.01 will go live simultaneously around the world, locally between February 28 and 29, depending on your location. In North America the patch will be implemented at 6 PM PT/9 PM ET on February 28. In the UK and Europe, the update will happen overnight, beginning at 2 AM GMT/3 AM CET on February 29. Japan will get the update on Thursday morning at 11 AM.

This update comes with a lengthy period of downtime, as server maintenance will begin half an hour before the update time, and continue for a further six hours. This news isn't as bad for Europeans, but American players will miss out on an evening of play, and Asian players will be locked out of Tekken 8 until the afternoon.

Full Update 1.02.01 patch notes

The full list of changes coming in this patch is below. Highlights include some well-needed bug fixes, the introduction of the Tekken Shop where you can purchase new and classic outfits, the aforementioned consequences for cheaters, and a whole host of tweaks to many of the characters.

There isn't anyone necessarily up on the chopping block, (except maybe Yoshimitsu, sorry Yoshi players!) nor has anyone been dramatically improved by this patch.
