Super Mario RPG: Release date, trailers & what we know
Super Mario RPG is back, and not only is the popular take on Mario returning, but we also have a release date for this adventure and an initial trailer. The original Super Mario RPG was first released in 1996 (although it has had a few re-releases over the years) on the SNES, and saw Mario team up with Bowser, Princess Peach and more as they embarked on a journey to find seven star pieces.
The original Super Mario RPG was developed by Squaresoft, and the game was heavily inspired by their Final Fantasy games. Although the return of Super Mario RPG after 27 years will surprise some, for others it will be incredibly exciting, so let’s dive into everything we know so far.

Is there a Super Mario RPG release date?
Click to enlargeDuring the reveal of Super Mario RPG, at June 2023's Nintendo Direct, we got a good glimpse of how the game would look as well as the release date on 17 November 2023. The announcement itself was quite a surprise, and the fact we will be playing this game later this year is even more surprising.

Is Super Mario RPG a remake?
Click to enlargeSuper Mario RPG is a remake of the 1996 classic, completely reinventing how it looks, with the battle system largely looking to remain the same. The original Super Mario RPG would have come out before a lot of gamers were even born, so for some, this will be their introduction to the game.

Super Mario RPG party members
Click to enlargeOriginally there were five characters in your party in Super Mario RPG, and in the trailer shown during the reveal, all of these characters are returning. The characters are:
- Mario
- Mallow
- Geno
- Bowser
- Princess Peach
For now, it looks like the above characters will be the only characters you can have in your party like the original, but we will have to wait and see if any other additions are made.

Do we know what the Super Mario RPG setting is?
Click to enlargeLike all great RPGs Super Mario RPG has plenty of different locations for players to explore, we don’t know yet just how true of a remake this will be or where it will be set. We may find ourselves in a Final Fantasy 7 Remake situation, where the game makes huge changes the further you progress.
However, we expect that the locations from the original title will appear in this remake. The locations in the original that we expect to return are:
- Mushroom Kingdom
- Pond to Pipes
- Yo’ster Isle
- Mole Mountains
- Seaside
- Land’s End
- Nimbus Land
- Smithy Factory
These locations were present in the original title's overworld, with plenty of smaller places littered throughout these regions as you explore.
