The Final Fantasy 14 Secret In The Box quest is quite unique, found right next to Old Sharlayan’s Aetheryte Plaza. What sets Secret In The Box apart from the other side quests in Final Fantasy 14 is that the player must solve three riddles to the location of NPCs without any quest markers or guidance. It’s sure to stump even the savviest Warriors of Light, so let’s step right into figuring out the FF14 Secret In The Box quest.

Firstly, you’ll want to speak to the Mysterious Maiden, right to the west of the Old Sharlayan Aetheryte. Once you talk to her, she’ll let you know that a mysterious benefactor has left you a present in the locked box resting beside them on the bench.

However, you will need three keys held by three different NPC’s scattered throughout Old Sharlayan. Solve the riddles to each of their locations, receive the three keys, and claim your prize.

The first clue reads as follows:

“Towards wisdom aspiring, a keeper doth gaze, By young minds inquiring and new trails blazed. Yet the mind is a muscle, in rest it doth grow, So let all embrace slumber, the better to know.”

For this clue head to The Baldesion Annex Aether Shard and walk the path to coordinates X 7.9, Y.13.8. Here you will find the Sleepy Student NPC, which you will need to perform the Doze action on in order to activate. Simply type /doze while targeting her and exhaust her dialogue to obtain the key.

Final Fantasy 14 Secret In The Box: Second Clue - Nutkin

The second clue reads:

“By life ever-flowing, a keeper doth wait, Clutching a prize, his hunger to sate. Yet no prize is so coveted as one golden-hued, The mention of which is never thought rude.”

Next, you’ll want to travel to The Rostra Aether Shard, and walk northwest to coordinates X 9, Y 7.3. Near the river is the squirrel named Nutkin, to who you will have to /say “golden acorn”, in order to activate. Do this correctly, and he will transform into a male Hyur named Former Nutkin and will give you your coveted key.

The final clue goes:

“Blessed by the nymphai, a keeper doth stand, Enthralled in a tale, a book in his hand. Yet evocative as letters on parchment may be, tis words said and heard which impel destiny.”

Head back to The Rotra Aether Shard and from here, head south over the ledge to coordinates X 11.5, Y 8.5. Here you will find a male Au Ra named Izumi, near the eastern staircase, and with a book in hand. Simply talk to him and exhaust his dialogue to earn the third and final key.

To wrap up the quest, head back to the Locked Box near the Old Sharlayan Aetheryte, and claim the prize of a Chrondite Ring Coffer, good for any level 88 combat job.
