Though many aren’t yet convinced by Xbox’s pulling power when it comes to exclusive titles, and despite the arrival of Bethesda to the game studios, one word is responsible for thousands of console sales already: Fable.

The fantasy brainchild of veritable oddball Peter Molyneux has been a cult favourite in the genre since its very first iteration, and the hint at a brand-new title has got fans very excited indeed.

And it looks like Xbox are getting in on the excitement - wait - no, actually. They’re not.

Xbox Teases Upcoming Fable Announcement

Xbox released a series of tweets that hinted at the fact that they had a Fable-themed announcement to make, much to the delight of long-time fans of the series.

“We’re excited to kick off something special tomorrow!” the account tweeted. “Just give us one more day to prepare the chickens.” Fans immediately picked up that the tweet must be talking about Fable, which was shortly confirmed by a follow-up - “We’d call it our Fable anniversary, but that name was already taken” the account said, referring to the game’s re-release of the same name.

But, it didn’t take long for fans’ excitement to be quashed.

Xbox Deletes Fable Teaser Tweets

The tweets that gave so many Fable fans hope have been pulled, and in their place, Xbox has posted an apology, suggesting that they don’t actually have any news on the upcoming game. Brilliant.

“Sorry for any confusion!” the follow-up tweet reads. “We don’t have any big game news tomorrow, or any ingo about @WeArePlayground’s upcoming Fable game.”

Who knows what prompted the original tweet, whether it was a sneaky coordinated hack or Xbox letting social media interns loose with passwords - but either, the blunder has disappointed a lot of fans.

Next time Xbox announce Fable news, here’s hoping it’s legitimate - as the company might become the boy who cried Fable.
