Let's get ready, let's get ready to (Worms) Rumble. That's right, those tiny garden-dwelling worms are back to blow each other to pieces for a whole new generation with Worms Rumble.

As the eyes of the gaming world are firmly on the release of the PlayStation 5, the next chapter of the long-running Worms franchise is just over the horizon, with a release date set for December 1, 2023. You'd better ready your Holy Hand Grenades.

Way back in 1995, British developer Team 17 launched Worms on the Amiga. Since then. we've got to grips with bouncing a well-timed Banana Bomb across the level, hearing the bleeting of the Super Sheep, or going for bust with a last-ditch Kamikazee. Although the franchise started to fall out of favour with some of its more obscure entries, fans hope things will be back on top form with the first game since Worms W.M.D. in 2016.

As Sony prepares for the much-hyped release of the PS5 in November, gaming franchises old and new are being forced to adapt to next-gen consoles. With an explosion of battle royale titles still dominating the industry, is it any wonder Team 17 has given Worms a lick of paint and a change of pace?

The official PlayStation blog announced Worms Rumble and confirmed what you can expect out of the box. 32 players will drop into the Worms Rumble map and duke it to be last worm standing. Moving away from the traditional turn-based gameplay of classic Worms, each of the modes will offer something different. Yes, you'll still be able to Bazooka opponents into oblivion, but with a battle royale mechanic, you'll also have to jetpack and zipline to safety if you want to survive.

There's also a trailer to show what Worms Rumble will look like - boasting 3D models similar to Worms Battlegrounds. Elsewhere, environmental assets like train tracks show Team 17 has really thought about the battle royale logistics of this one. With Worms Rumble unveiling its open beta for PS4 and PC on November 6, fans old and new are encouraged to parachute in and give this online multiplayer a run for its money.

The full game is coming on December 1, 2023, and with the PS5 hitting shelves in mid-November, it should give gamers enough time to try it out before they settle in for Worms Rumble. Sure, it might not have the crisp visuals of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but that doesn't mean Worms Rumble won't be just as fun. Here's hoping this one causes a (Worms) rumble in the jungle.
