Warzone players are fumbling in the dark with NVG Gulag event

The NVG Gulag is causing quite the kerfuffle in the Warzone community, with players expressing their frustration at the poor visibility the game mode offers.

There's nothing worse in Call of Duty than being killed by someone you can't even see, but the developer of Warzone appears to have turned that frustration into a feature with the latest Gulag update.

Added at the turn of Season 1 Reloaded, the NVG Gulag event is random and throws players into a completely darkened arena when it occurs. Equipped with little more than a set of Night Vision Goggles (NVGs), the two opponents are then tasked with fumbling around in the dark before one picks off the other.

It's an event that's meant to be tricky, adding a little bit of spice into the typical 1v1 scenarios that can regurgitate you back into the wider match. However, in typical Call of Duty fashion, the players aren't happy about it.

Hey, who turned out the lights?

It barely takes a couple of scrolls on the Warzone Reddit to find players who are clearly unhappy with the inclusion of NVG Gulag. Visibility has long been a point of contention in this version of Warzone, and this appears to be the straw that’s broken the camel's back.

One user writes, "Why the f*ck do they insist on this game being played like im goddamn Bane... born in the darkness. When im not. I have my brightness maxed and even dicked with my monitor to try and brighten the screen."

Another user shares a gameplay clip that's sarcastically captioned "NVG Gulag has great visibility…," with an addendum that says "Who’s idea was this?", targeted at the Warzone developer.

In fairness, the enemy that kills this player is clear to see when watching the clip back. However, the setting is clearly far darker than it normally is and likely contributes to the frustration that many players face when dropped into the high-octane 1v1 gunfights.

Try before you buy

The comments only agree with the original post's sentiment, saying, "This is why we need an experimental playlist for Warzone, so we can catch dogsh*t ideas like this before they make it into the rest of the game."

Other online multiplayer games like Rainbow Six Siege and Overwatch have fairly popular test environments in which developers try out new game mechanics before rolling them out to the public. It's an idea that's been floated among the Call of Duty player base before but has never really come to fruition.

The Warzone developer hasn't yet commented on the NVG Gulag debacle, nor has it issued any statement on visibility in the game or expressed an interest in patching the feature out. For the foreseeable future, it seems like Call of Duty players are just going to have to chew on a few more carrots before their next Gulag outing.
