Warzone esports has gone through quite a few workshops when it comes to its format, moving on from the 2v2 kill races to custom lobbies and even a winner-takes-all Solo Yolo cash-grab, where all rules go out of the window.
But when it comes to the settled esports format, there's a lot left to be desired than the one we have. One example of a better battle royale esports format comes in from Apex Legends, and now, Warzone fans want it for their own.
Warzone fans want to steal the Apex Legends esports format
Warzone's current esports format is straight-up points-based. Combining kills and placement together, it's simply a case of whoever has the most points by the end of Game Six wins - even if the winning team gets eliminated first in the final map.
However, Apex Legends has a system which introduces "Match Point", where if a team wins one game, or gets over a pre-determined points threshold, they have to win a match to be crowned champions.
This system means a number of teams end up on this winning barrier, and the intensity grows with each round as more squads begin sparring for that final win.
So far, it has never been deployed into Warzone, though. Well, until this week, when OpTic Gaming hosted a $200K event using this format, and fans loved it.
The OpTic tournament was seen as a massive success - aside from a rather bonkers NSFW incident - and fans pointed towards the format as the main reason behind the enjoyment.
"Been asking for Match Point for so long and happy we got to see one that’s really competitive," said Warzone mogul Hector "Repullze" Torres.
Competitive Warzone player Joseph "JoeWo" Wohala also agreed, saying, "Warzone Match Point Format >. No flares, gulag tokens & redeploy packs played so well today."
Apex Legends' patents might prove too tricky for Warzone to steal
Why hasn't Warzone stolen this format then? They're not shy at nabbing features like redeploy balloons, so why not an esports format? The problem lies with Apex Legends having a patent for this formula, preventing it from being copied.
Back in 2021, EA successfully patented the "dynamic gameplay session management system", which sees teams need to surpass a points threshold before being able to "unlock tournament victory conditions." Basically, the "match point" system belongs to EA, as far as gaming and esports go.
It's not certain how OpTic and Call of Duty managed to deploy this in the most recent Warzone event, but it's been hailed by fans who are all calling for this to be re-used when it comes to other events and the new World Series season. Whether the World Series of Warzone can actually nab this is another tale...
