Switch-Exclusive Resident Evil Rumoured For This Year

The long-running Resident Evil series is far from circling the grave, with Capcom's long-running zombies series celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2021. Alongside the much-hyped release of Resident Evil Village, the developer is keen to show it's not just the towering Lady Dimitrescu ruling the roost. Just like hopes there are a tonne of Pokemon announcements on the way (to celebrate its own 25 years), the latest rumours suggest a Nintendo Switch-exclusive Resident Evil title is on the way before the year is out.

The Nintendo Switch is no stranger to Resi games thanks to most of them making their way onto the pint-sized console. Even Resident Evil 7 has appeared on Switch - albeit only in Japan. Sadly, there are no current plans for Village to appear on Switch yet, meaning fans of the house that Mario built are feeling a bit left out in the rain by Umbrella. All is not lost though, with a Switch-exclusive Resident Evil game being a break from Nintendo's usually family-friendly image.

What is the Switch-exclusive Resident Evil game rumour?

According to notable leaker Dusk Golem, Resident Evil Outrage could be coming out at some point in late 2021 or early 2022. They seem confident it will be exclusive to Switch, although it could be ported to the other big hitters at a later date. If you want to know what Outrage is about, it's excitingly a spiritual successor to the Resident Evil: Revelations franchise. In fact, Dusk Golem claims Outrage was built from scrapped plans for Resident Evil: Revelations 3. Remembering that the original Revelations released exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS in 2012, it all fits together nicely.

As for what else you can expect, Dusk Golgm is confident it will be part of Capcom's 25th-anniversary celebrations, meaning it will release within a year of Village. They first heard of Revelations 3 in 2017, while the character "Rebecca" will apparently be the lead. This surely the fan-favourite Rebecca Chambers who was introduced in 1996's Resident Evil and went on to become the focus of the Resident Evil Zero prequel. Finally, the game is tipped to have a bigger budget than the first two Revelations and is compared to Code: Veronica in terms of size. Given that Village is only coming to PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, it should at least appease disgruntled Switch owners.

Are we getting the Switch-exclusive Resident Evil game?

For those who aren't convinced, Dusk Golem's claims tie into that massive Capcom leak from last year. Although they could've just plucked the name from nowhere, Resident Evil Outrage was one of the titles specifically mentioned in the leak. In the same dump of priceless data, it was suggested Resident Evil 4 remake is on the way to continue the recent trend of giving the main series games a fresh lick of paint. Barely a week goes by that someone doesn't throw around the idea of giving the GameCube favourite from 2005 a new lease of life. Just like an impending announcement for Outrage, no one knows when/if Capcom will announce a RE4 remake.

If all of the above wasn't enough, those who order Village are promised a multiplayer game called Resident Evil Re:Verse that won't tie directly into the eighth main game. Considering the original Revelations was set between Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, could Outrage bridge the gap between Resident Evil and Village to expand Ethan Winters, Chris Redfield, or Lady Dimitrescu's backstory? The Village demo (Maiden) already teased a much larger world, so it's clear there are stories to tell.
