After leaks suggested that The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered was on its way, Sony has announced that a PS5 remaster will be coming early 2024.

Details about the game leaked on PSN earlier today, resulting in an official announcement confirming the rumours.

Sony has officially announced The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered

Sony has announced that The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered will be coming to PlayStation 5 on 19 January 2024.

In a blog post about the release, Naughty Dog said: “The team here at Naughty Dog is excited to announce The Last of Us Part II Remastered, the definitive way to experience the acclaimed The Last of Us sequel originally released in 2020. We’re thrilled to confirm you won’t have to wait long for it either; players can jump into Ellie and Abby’s emotional journeys on the PlayStation 5 console on January 19, 2024.

“Whether you’ve already played and even platinumed The Last of Us Part II on the PlayStation 4 console or have recently jumped into The Last of Us Part I on PS5 and want to continue the story, Part II Remastered will offer plenty of reasons for new and returning players to revisit a story that means so much to our studio..

“We’re so excited to natively bring The Last of Us Part II to the PlayStation 5 as the definitive way to experience the sequel and everything it has to offer, while also offering fans new and returning deeper levels of appreciation for the work that went into it.”

While the release will include a remaster of the game itself, it will also come with new features.

These include a roguelike survival mode, guitar freeplay, lost levels and a new unlockable character.

Fans are excited about the ability to upgrade and gain new content

While plenty of new content for the game has been announced, it seems like the thing that has caught most players attention is the ability to upgrade their game for only $10.

The Naughty Dog blog post said: “Good news for existing owners of The Last of Us Part II on PlayStation 4! You will be able to upgrade to a digital version of The Last of Us Part II Remastered for $10 USD at launch. You’ll also be able to import your saves from the original game to Part II Remastered.”

Naughty Dog has also confirmed that owners of PS4 disc copies will need to insert the disc into the PS5 every time they want to download or play the PS5 digital version, meaning a PS5 with a disc drive will be needed.

This means that anyone who has already purchased The Last of Us Part 2 will be able to access the additional features without having to completely repurchase the game, and will be able to bring their save files along with them.

One commenter shared on Reddit: “Damn, that's huge. I picked up Part 2 for only $10 and I still wouldn't have bought this for full price. Definitely going to be buying it now, though.”
