The gaming world is no stranger to weird and wonderful contraptions, and as the console developing giants like Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft continues to evolve technology, more and more wired creations are becoming available.

For controllers, gone are the old times of joysticks and simplistic red buttons that were prevalent on the early Atari and Gamecube consoles. Both PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch became compatible with a sleek and comfortable controller, able to recognise many different instructions that have led us to be able to experience the most convoluted games and birth esports as one of the most competitive and skilful abilities on the planet.

In a world where real-life car simulators are met with cutting edge virtual reality technology, where can the possibilities of controllers possibly go to next?

Well, Sony has identified one of the more bizarre routes, opting to use a banana as a way of controlling video games.

The creators of PlayStation have submitted a patent that will allow their consumers to use a banana to slay their way through Demon Souls or sling Miles Morales' webs.

The patent intends to create a controller out of any household item, with the developers picking a banana as a prime example. By gently squeezing certain parts of the yellow fruits, the hardware (that has not been fully detailed) will recognise this as a correlation to pressing buttons on a controller.

Sony states "The system comprises an input unit operable to obtain images of a passive non-luminous object being held by a user as a video games controller", before going on to add "The non-luminous object may correspond to an everyday item such as e.g. a banana, orange, mug, pen, glass, etc".

So there you have it, Sony intends to use Mario's favourite booby trap as a controller. I've heard weirder things in my life, but that's up there.
