Second Warcraft Movie Rumoured, Chris Metzen Approves
According to a scoop by Daniel Richtman, a sequel to the 2016 movie Warcraft is now in development at Legendary Pictures. Former Senior Vice-President of Storytelling at Blizzard Entertainment and fan favourite Chris Metzen shared his excitement of the potential news, though avoided to comment on the report's validity or his involvement.
When asked if Metzen knew anything about the production of a second Warcraft movie, he stated that he didn’t “but I do know that the last one was pretty cool and deserved better than it got.”
Metzen, who had a significant hand in the story development of Blizzard Entertainment’s biggest franchises like Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft, had left the company in September 2016 for family-related reasons. During his career at Blizzard, he wore many hats from artistic character design, voice acting, development lead and storytelling, gaining a large fanbase due to his community-facing appearances on several development panels especially at Blizzcon.
The first movie had gotten bad ratings by critics with a score of 28% on movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes but was generally well-received by fans. While it wasn’t a commercial success, it likely at least broke even. It held the title of highest-grossing video game movie adaptation until Detective Pikachu threw it off the throne in 2019.
Considering the sheer size and general appeal of the Warcraft story, a sequel appears plausible. The source material spans potentially dozens of films with the only limiting factor appearing to be commercial success.
