Much like Capcom has with Resident Evil, Square Enix has gotten Final Fantasy fans used to remakes at this point. While the story ploughed forward with Final Fantasy 16 and Clive's story, players have been hyper-focused on the next instalment of Final Fantasy 7 remakes.

After the success of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, they're wondering what could be next - and even considering that the remakes won't end with Cloud and Sephiroth's fight.

Leaks indicate that Square Enix has bolder plans than to finish FF7, but some aren't sure what to make of them. Remakes are coming, but they might not be quite as remake-y as we had hoped.

Leaks claim FF9 remake is coming - but it may be minor

A new claim from industry insider Silknigth reports that a long-rumoured Final Fantasy 9 remake could be on the way, but they're equally reporting that the game might not be what we think it is.

We're blinded by the brilliance of the Final Fantasy 7 remakes, which show just how impressive a classic RPG brought to modern audiences can be. According to the leaker, we might miss that same sparkle and shine if we return to the franchise's ninth instalment.

Responding to a Twitter user asking if the games could come to all consoles, Silknighth said, "It’s not necessary for all games to have a contract; right now, there are future-oriented thoughts. FFIX is not a very ambitious project." It's a curious phrasing that has set alarm bells ringing.

What does this "not very ambitious" FF leak mean?

Fans are theorising what this could mean for the rumoured remake, with Final Fantasy 14 director Yoshi-P fuelling the fire himself with FF9-themed pre-order bonuses for the game. Speaking at PAX East, Yoshi-P said, "You may have noticed a lot of Final Fantasy 9 references here, but the reason is a secret."

If Silknighth is right, it suggests that we're not going to get a full trilogy of AAA remakes like with Final Fantasy 7, and rather, fans are considering that we could be in for a return to the game that echoes the scale of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7.

If the rumoured Final Fantasy 9 remake scrapes the bottom of the barrel for effort or style, it might knock expectant players over the head. It's easy to forget that FF7's remakes have been a huge amount of work and time to create, and Square Enix's output isn't infinite. Brace for impact, or lack thereof.
