We're six months into Modern Warfare 2’s lifetime, and the post-launch content has finally made the game into a stable and enjoyable Call of Duty title.

But with more time on the clock, before we see Modern Warfare 2 be eclipsed, there's still more to be desired. That means there's still time to save the divisive title before we abandon it early.

Following the addition of the MW2 multiplayer map Alboran Hatchery, Infinity Ward has revealed that the last three maps to come this year will be tailored towards a competitive style of play, in a bid to appease the Ranked community and casual grinders.

Having weighed focus on the likes of Shipment (the mistakenly created CoD legend) and Shoot House in the early seasons of Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward has revealed there will be three more "new" post-launch maps and all of them "lean into" competitive play.

"[For] the last three maps of this year, we've kind of leaned into maps I think would play that [competitive] style really well," said Infinity Ward Design Director Geoff Smith in an interview with Dexerto.

"It'll be fun to see. I like to throw in some exploratory stuff in post-launch. Secret little tests to see how things resonate and how they play. But it’ll be fun to see how those go over," Smith added.

Interestingly, these comments come just as the official competitive Call of Duty League season is set to reach its climax, with the final Major before the World Championships being next weekend. It means these new maps will not be played in the pinnacle of competitive CoD, only in Ranked.

Infinity Ward claims there are only three more maps for MW2

One main piece of information to point out is that there still remains three seasons of content left in Modern Warfare 2's lifecycle before the leaked Modern Warfare 3 takes over in November (beta expected in October), but only three more core multiplayer maps will be coming.

Of course, this doesn't include more Gunfight and Ground War designs, and the two additional Warzone maps (Las Almas and Vondel), but it might be quite worrisome for MW2 fans that there will only be three maps in six months of the game's lifespan.

This approach might now indicate that Infinity Ward is reevaluating just how much of their fan base is weighed on the casual and competitive sides, with Ranked being quite a pivotal game mode for player retention.
