Metroid Dread Reveals Samus’ New Abilities
Metroid Dread has been a long time coming. Though a lot of fans of the series are still holding out for a Metroid Prime 4 trailer soon, we’ve finally got another 2D instalment in the series to look forward to, and it’s touching on a historical story beat that fans have wanted to learn more about for ages.
Dread is the first 2D title in the series since 2017’s Metroid: Samus Returns on the 3DS, and the return to form could be the very best entry to the series so far. It’s coming packed with new additions to the series like the petrifying E.M.M.I we saw in the first trailer, but now, a new trailer has given us a look at what we can expect from the title.
What does the new Metroid Dread trailer reveal?
The latest peek at Metroid Dread has confirmed some story beats that will guide the narrative of the game. The trailer opens with Samus flying to a new planet, as text fills us in on the X Parasite - a life form that is capable of mimicking its prey. It was once thought to be extinct until a transmission sent to the Galactic Federation suggested otherwise.
The E.M.M.I (Extraplanetary Multiform Mobile Identifier Robots) were sent to the planet of interest to investigate, but they vanished after landing.
It looks like Samus’ role in Metroid Dread is to discover what happened to the bots after arriving on the planet, all while steering clear of the dangerous adversaries.
But that’s not all we learned recently about the new Metroid game - the newest Metroid Dread report has revealed some new abilities for Samus.
What new abilities does Samus have in Metroid Dread?
In the latest Metroid Dread report, Nintendo has revealed that Samus is bringing some new abilities on her new adventure. Her arm cannon is coming packed with her classic beam attack, along with a grapple beam that allows her to tow items or swing over gaps, and some hefty missiles to get her out of a pickle.
She also has her melee counter that we saw in Metroid: Samus Returns, and her returning morph ball form. She now has the ability to tap into Aeion energy that gives her access to new and interesting abilities like a Phantom Cloak that renders her invisible for a short period of time.
Metroid Dread is shaping up to be an interesting new addition to the mythos of 2D Metroid, and we can’t wait to get our hands on it.
