Like it or loathe it, Fortnite is no stranger to the odd pop culture collaboration. It's to such a degree, even the most absurd fan theories as to who could come to the island are humoured.

We only have to look as far as the long-expected Family Guy crossover rumours to see that players are more than willing to get excited for a crossover that makes absolutely no sense, providing they'll get to do something as absurd as drop into the island as Peter Griffin.

Though there are some deeply silly ideas, there are others that make sense but also offer an incredibly bizarre shift in tone. And perhaps the darkest property yet may be about to touch down in Fortnite.

It turns out that some of the team members at Epic Games have spoken about the potential for a Fortnite crossover with The Last of Us. This comes after the launch of the HBO series sparked rumours that Joel and Ellie would be next to drop out of the battle bus.

VHS_Soho has reported that Epic Games' Chief Creative Officer Donald Mustard has supposedly teased that a collaboration with the video game or HBO series "could happen in the future."

It's interesting, as we rarely get hints about upcoming collaborations for Fortnite this way, but it could still be valid and finally bring an end to the insurmountable speculation.

Fortnite isn't against more adult crossovers, as the recent Attack on Titan collab proved. We've also had zombies before in the form of Resident Evil skins appearing in the shop. Would Ellie and Jole simply be another way to get us to part with our V-bucks or something more substantial?

Will The Last of Us come to Fortnite as a game or a series?

It's interesting to speculate about which version of Joel and Ellie we'll see in the game - the versions that appear in-game, or the reflection of the characters we saw in Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay in the HBO series. But it could technically be both.

It wouldn't be the first time that a skin was interchangeable between video game and live-action models, as Tom Holland's Nathan Drake Uncharted skin allowed players to switch and change the versions they played as.

Who knows, maybe the internet's daddy could be coming to Fortnite very soon. Let's just hope the pickaxe item isn't a golf club.
