The time has finally come for Fortnite to make its epic return to iOS after policy changes.
Fortnite was removed from the app store in 2020 in a bid for Epic Games to stand up against Apple’s 30% commission policy.
Mobile Fortnite players who have been left in limbo for almost four years are naturally very excited at the prospect of returning to the shooter on their iPhones.
Fortnite is returning to iOS later this year
After a new EU law forced policy changes, Fortnite will be able to return to iOS by utilising an Epic Games Store app.
It was announced on Twitter tonight that Fortnite is returning to Apple mobile devices later this year.
The tweet read: “Remember Fortnite on iOS? How ‘bout we bring that back.
“Later this year Fortnite will return in Europe on iOS through the Epic Games
Store (shoutout DMA - an important new law in the EU making this possible).
“Apple, the world is watching.”
It has been almost four years since Epic Games made the decision to remove Fortnite from the app store in a stand against Apple’s store policies which meant it would receive 30% commission from all apps on its devices.
Recent changes to EU law mean that Epic Games will be able to have their own app store on iOS devices without the need to get approval from Apple.
This feature, which is called Sideloading, will arrive alongside iOS 17.4 in March, however Epic has not yet stated when they will begin making use of this.
Mobile Fortnite players are thrilled to be back
Players who have been stuck on Chapter 2 Season 3 since late 2020 are naturally very excited to be able to jump back into the game.
One Twitter user commented: “I can't believe it! We have waited 3.5 years for this moment.”
Another said: “I never thought this day would come.”
“The biggest W of the year,” said a third.
It is not yet confirmed whether or not Fortnite or the mobile Epic Games store will be coming to UK iOS devices since it is based solely on an EU law.
That said, the introduction in the EU could be the beginning of a wider spread implementation, so it is not worth losing all hope just yet.
