There ain't no party like a Fortnite party, at least, that used to be the motto of those jumping into Epic Games' beloved battle royale. Sadly, a change to the way Fortnite parties work promises to give us a headache, and potentially, let toxic players ruin the fun.Β

Although Fortnite started out with Save the World and Battle Royale modes, it has since expanded to include the likes of Zero Build, as well as more recent additions of Rocket Racing and LEGO Fortnite. There are typically party sizes of one to four players, which the party leader decides. Or at least that used to be the case.Β

Fortnite changes its party rules

There are plenty of things we ask Epic to include in its Fortnite updates, and the developer is usually pretty hot on ironing out the kinks. After all, it didn't take long for the team to add hireable NPCs back in after they were disabled in Chapter 5 Season 1.

Now, a change that no one asked for has found itself in Fortnite, allowing anyone in the party to change the game mode. It used to be up to the party leader to decide, but a last-minute switch to Zero Build or turning your Duo into a Squad can now be done by anyone.Β

When someone called out the apparent glitch, the official Fortnite account responded to confirm it was an intended update. We can already see potential problems of your mates changing modes just to be funny, or what about the chaos of playing with randoms?

Fortnite fans hate the new update

As you can imagine, the unexpected party update hasn't gone down well. Seeing the kind of hate levelled at Call of Duty: Warzone, the usually placid Fortnite community is up in arms. One critic said, "I remember when you guys used to release detailed patch notes explaining all the changes for each update."Β

Another added, "Please revert this I don’t want my friends changing the dam game mode when I just want to play zero build," and a third said, "Getting rid of people being allowed to change the game in Fortnite parties! Only the leader should be able to do that. It gets really annoying when people switch the party game to be toxic!"

Someone else grumbled, "That makes no sense? Why would other players be able to spam choose what they want to play? There's a party leader for a reason no? Also players can join your private creative sessions, unless you set your status to away that goes back to live randomly. Is that intended as well?"

There are plenty of suggestions for how the feature should include a prompt or toggle option for party leaders, but whether Epic listens to us or bulldozes on regardless remains to be seen. In the meantime, get ready for some frustrating trolling.
