Epic Games boss teases Fortnite movie
It seems that after the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the sky is the limit when it comes to video game adaptations.
It might seem as though the title needs to feature the biggest video game character in history and the support of the animation team behind the Minions, but this has opened the door for video games, no matter how inherently childish, to step onto the screen with finesse.
Of course, when thinking of video games that kids would love to see on the big screen, Fortnite is the first that leaps to mind - though the game isn't exactly narrative-heavy. Thankfully, though, a boss at the game has a few ideas.
The Fortnite movie has a few tricks up its sleeve
Speaking with Collider, it's clear that some ideas for a Fortnite movie have been floated behind closed doors, as the Chief Creative Officer at Epic Games has confirmed. Although, don't expect Fortnite to ride the Battle Bus into cinemas in 2023.
"To me, I wanna do stuff that always just feels authentic and is a great story," Donald Mustard says. "And so, it's not something we're actively working on right now.
Explaining how things could evolve, Mustard added, "I'm not gonna say it would never happen. In fact, I mean, I know exactly how I would do the Fortnite whatever. Exactly. I know exactly the story I'd want to, but it's not the focus right now. I don't have time."
If Epic Games wanted to do a Fortnite movie, they would
Mustard goes on to suggest that the team at Epic Games is pretty busy as far as Fortnite goes anyway, so the potential of a film isn't at the top of their list of priorities.
Alluding to the relationship between the company and The Russo Brothers' production company AGBO, he hints that if they wanted to make a Fortnite movie, it'd be greenlit in no time. "Oh yeah, a Fortnite movie gets greenlit by any studio in a second," he adds. "It's just there's other stuff we're working on right now."
Fortnite has packed A-list stars like Brie Larson and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson into the game before, so their transition to the silver screen is possible. A Fortnite movie might not be right around the corner just yet, but we know that if an outing based on the battle royale came to be, it'd be a rip-roaring success.
