Electronic Arts is rolling out the heavy artillery and making its final assault on the first-person shooter franchise, as Battlefield 6 takes its shot. Much like Apex Legends and VALORANT or PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite duking it out, the war between Call of Duty and Battlefield has waged since 2003. Both offer something different, but with there being more than a few comparisons, most players are split into two camps.

With promises to learn from the mistakes of 2018's Battlefield V, EA DICE is doing its best to make sure Battlefield 6 heads out into the trenches with a well-stocked arsenal. EA CEO Andrew Wilson has teased the next-gen potential of Battlefield 6, with the ability "bring massive and immersive battles to life with more players than ever" and hopes of massive 128-player maps. As gamers struggle to wade through their own "battlefield" of rumours, the big question remains, when will we be able to play Battlefield 6?

What's the rumoured Battlefield 6 release date?

Before we even get to the release of Battlefield 6, we probably need to see it in action first. The official Battlefield Twitter account shared a logo and promised a look at the game "soon". It was a typically vague promise that would've likely rattled players, however, it was followed by a second tweet that added, "Words that rhyme with Soon: June, Boom". So there we have it, a not-so-subtle confirmation that the first Battlefield 6 trailer will drop in June.

Then again, June is a long month, and we're still no closer to finding out when we'll be able to drive our tanks into action. Although industry insider Tom Henderson had originally sketched a May reveal for Battlefield 6, word on the circuit is that the recent Chinese rocket disaster means EA has delayed the presentation. Various leaks have claimed the game will take place in a fictional future of 2025 and include the real-life setting of the Tanegashima Space Center. We're guessing rockets will be blown up, which might be a little too close to home in the wake of a Chinese rocket crashing into the Indian Ocean.

Has the Battlefield 6 release been delayed?

In terms of a concrete Battlefield 6 release date, the first trailer should give you a date to pencil in your diary. Things are still on target for a release sometime in 2021, with other reports saying Battlefield 6 could be a wholly next-gen release to skip the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in favour of PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. If this is the case, it's a major step for the franchise and would usher in a new era of the Battlefield name. Added to this, there are still hopes EA will cash in on the battle royale hype and include the fan-favourite mode in the next game.

The road to Battlefield 6 has been a long and bumpy one. Despite selling well, Battlefield V was a pretty lacklustre affair that drew criticisms from all sides. We assume work on Battlefield 6 has been going on for a long time, but only recently, EA delayed the new Need For Speed by a whole year to add Criterion to the B6 team. As Activision continued to churn out Call of Duty games on a yearly basis, there's a danger that Battlefield has been left taking shelter. Here's hoping Battlefield 6 can prove its critics wrong and claim victory in 2021.
