Following the news that Larian Studios isn't looking to jump into Baldur's Gate 4 and isn't planning any DLCs for the base game, it's easy to be sad. But frankly, given the great job the team has done, Baldur's Gate 3 will go down in history as one of the best and most extensive RPGs ever.

Even so, Larian's reluctance doesn't mean that we'll never get another Baldur’s Gate. In fact, it might make the next one come around quicker. After all, the wait of 23 years between Baldur's Gate II and the third game was an agonising one.

It seems that Hasbro is keen to keep the 'gate' open, as the game has done wonders for the wider Dungeons & Dragons brand. Now, the publisher is ready to look ahead at what comes next. Whether Larian Studios is attached or not, Baldur's Gate 4 looks like it's coming.

Blimey, it's already happening. Even though Larian Studios has suggested that it's going to move away from the Dungeon & Dragons world, Hasbro certainly hasn't. Hasbro discussed the franchise's future at the BAFTA Awards and confirmed conversations are happening behind the scenes

"We're now talking to lots of partners and being approached by a lot of partners who are embracing the challenge of, what does the future of the Baldur's Gate franchise look like?" Eugene Evans, the Senior Vice President of Digital Strategy and Licensing for Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, said to PCGamer.

"So we certainly hope that it's not another 25 years, as it was from Baldur's Gate 2 to 3, before we answer that. But we're going to take our time and find the right partner, the right approach, and the right product that could represent the future of Baldur's Gate."

Evans concluded, "We take that very, very seriously, as we do with all of our decisions around our portfolio. We don't rush into decisions as to who to partner with on products or what products we should be considering."

It's certainly nice to see that Hasbro doesn't plan on rushing anything, especially given how much love and care Baldur's Gate 3 has brought to life. Still, as Hasbro stands to make a lot of money from its newfound success, it's not likely to forget about the franchise.

Dungeons & Dragons is a behemoth of an IP at this stage, so we can't blame Hasbro for looking to crank its output. After all, where else are we going to be able to sleep with bears (much to the fury of TikTok) or play an entire game as a cat, seemingly against the will of its creators?
